Last Week in Talent.pngWelcome to Last Week in Talent,

Last week the jobless rate hit a 10 year low while hiring and wages grew. In possibly related news, USA Today reported that job-hopping is on the rise: “63% of workers are open to making a switch, according to a separate national survey of 2,156 employees that ADP conducted. Seventeen percent are looking while 46% are receptive to an overture from a recruiter.”

In other news, customer success startup Gainsight announced a $52M round led by Lightspeed Ventures (if you don’t know who they are, your customer support team definitely does), Apple is investing $200M in upstate New York-based glass manufacturer Corning to develop state-of-the-art glass, Mya raised $11.4M to streamline blue collar and service industry recruiting, SmartRecruiters and Ideal announced a new partnership they say can drive cost of hire down 71% and tripled productivity using AI (can you say “whoa”?), and Glassdoor helpfully breaks down the differences between Millennials and Generation Z (if you're like me and didn't know Generation Z existed, then definitely check that out).

Elsewhere, FastCompany wonders if people should start texting job candidates (because sending them dozens of unrequited emails isn't quite enough), IFTT finds that software hiring is up but hardware hiring is down, ZDnet reports that introverts are more at risk to automation (because computers still can't fake personality and likability, yet), while MIT hosted a panel asking whether automation is actually all that disruptive to labor markets (spoiler alert: maybe).

And finally, ask yourself how well you really know job-seekers, consider hiring people with these three weaknesses and read a bunch of software engineer’s describe their average workday. Sample quote: [08:00] ... work on something I procrastinated on the previous day so that I can have a good standup report” So yeah, software engineers procrastinate just like us (all the more reason to send that follow-up email today, right?).

Anyway, that's it for now. Good luck and happy hunting. We'll see you again next week.
