In honor of Martin Luther King Day, here is the Diversity series we did this in year’s past.

The key to diversity is to put down your fear and assumptions long enough to get curious.  It’s way harder than it sounds. It requires courage to be vulnerable and wrong. But I can promise that on the other side are amazing human beings. And some that will still think you’re a jerk. Do it anyway. You are worth it. We all are.

Diversity: Tampering with Certainty  “Equal opportunity does not mean treating everyone like a 50 year-old white guy. It means appreciating people for who they actually are.”

Diversity: Voices of Discrimination  “Atticus, he was real nice. Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.” Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

Diversity: Get Off My Lawn “There is no way to talk about diversity without offending someone in some way.”IMG_8797-001

Diversity: Perception, Inequality and Blame  “There will never be agreement on the causes of discrimination, and blaming and assigning fault neither prevents discrimination nor promotes equality. Instead, we need to start by acknowledging that discrimination is real.”

Diversity: Why Laws Don’t Fix Discrimination  “(L)aws do not solve social and cultural issues. They will never create true equality between people, because that requires tolerance of differences by both individuals and institutions. And there will never be enough resources to uncover and prosecute every act of illegal discrimination. As the courts are defunded and lawyers can only afford to work for rich people, it will get harder to enforce the laws that do exist.”

Diversity: Why Tolerance Isn’t Enough  “Humans are not discretionary. If you exist, you qualify to be here. Period.”

Hiring for Diversity  “Equal does not mean the same.  3+4 = 2+5  Both sides equal 7. Each piece of the equation is made up of positive, whole, numbers. But 3 is not 5. And most people involve some negatives and fractions. Human beings rarely add up.”
