Talent management software encompasses everything from hiring and onboarding to employee development and retention. It helps businesses manage current employees, in addition to assisting with the hiring phase.

Though they may seem similar to HR software, talent management systems take a different approach to managing people. Whereas HR software focuses on managing administrative tasks (such as payroll, benefits, and PTO), talent management software focuses on developing top talent within your organization through functionalities such as performance management, performance reviews, and succession planning.

It can be a stand-alone system that lets you pick and choose between various features and functionalities, or it can be integrated into a larger HR or HCM (human capital management) system.

The software systems in this report are some of the most popular solutions out there, but this research is not all-inclusive. There may be a system better suited for your business needs that isn't included in this report; check out our talent management software directory for a full list of available products.

When selecting software, remember to demo products and talk directly to software vendors to get a better idea of what they offer and how it matches up with what you're looking for.

Research

This infographic is part of our Top 20 research series, which utilizes our unique Popularity Index. The index produces a weighted and ranked score based on:

  1. Number of customers

  2. Number of users

  3. Social media presence (Facebook likes, Twitter, and LinkedIn followers)

  4. Reviews on Capterra

Customers and users each make up 40% of the final score, and the combined social component and reviews make up the remaining 20%.

In this infographic, we define "customers" as the number of companies/organizations with an active license to the talent management software. We define "users" as end users at those customer organizations who have access to the software (e.g., employees that access the system, administrators/HR staff, etc.)

*We pull social numbers a few days before launch, so they are as accurate as possible given how these numbers fluctuate.

Data

We open the research to every vendor listed in our talent management directory and rely on software companies to submit information on their customer, user, and social presence. If a vendor is not responsive or is unable to provide us with information, we create a Capterra estimate based on publicly available information and industry averages. Those estimates are highlighted in the table below:

We give all vendors the opportunity to respond to these estimates before publishing.

Although we cannot audit vendor-submitted numbers, we do our best to push back on anything that seems inflated or unlikely. However, all numbers here should be considered estimates.

What talent management system are you currently using? Are there any solutions that we missed? We update our reports annually and would love to hear your thoughts!
