Four High Performance Habits Anyone Can Develop

This article is more than 4 years old.

High performance habits are practices that put you in the right mindset to achieve your goals. It doesn’t matter where you are in your career, chosen field or stage in life—high performance habits will always steer you in the right direction.

But, there’s only one way to turn something into a habit—commit to consistency until it starts to feel natural to you. Success looks different to everyone, but no matter what your goals are, everything begins in your mind. Here are four powerful high performance habits that everyone can adopt.

Wake Up Early And Have A Consistent Morning Routine

Every morning presents a new opportunity to achieve your goals. So, getting in a winning mindset is essential. Waking up early and giving yourself adequate time to complete your morning routine means by the time you start working, you’ll already feel a sense of accomplishment.

Without enough time to complete your morning routine, you’ll likely feel rushed, stressed and anxious. Starting the day off on a negative note takes you away from your goals.

Many successful people find the cornerstone of their routines to be hydrating, moving their bodies, meditation, and eating. Figure out what you can do realistically and consistently. For example, if you need to arrive at your office at 7:30 a.m., exercising and eating breakfast probably isn't an option. So, choose the workout. Then, have a protein bar and Celsius while en routine to work.

Knowing you’ve completed your morning tasks gives you a sense of achievement, putting you in the right headspace for the rest of the day.

Choose To Approach Everything With A Positive Attitude

No matter how much money you make, doing things you don’t feel entirely enthusiastic about is a part of life. Whether you’re an attorney who takes on an uninteresting case because it’s a referral, or you have a colleague who never quite pulls their weight—everyone has to make it through the drudgery.

It’s easy to become angry and frustrated, but having a bad attitude doesn’t change anything. It often makes things worse. Furthermore, that attitude permeates into other parts of your life.

Write Down Your Goals

We all have a lot of ideas in our head, whether it’s general to-do list items or long-term goals. No matter what category these plans fall under, it’s important to write everything down.

How you do that is up to you. If you use your phone for everything, an app may be best, even if it’s just the basic notes app. If you like detailed journaling, a bullet journal can potentially work wonders for you. Putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) turns an idea into an action or a thought into something tangible.

Have Positive And Successful People In Your Life

They say if you want to become a better tennis player, you should play with someone more skilled than you. The same is true for most things in life. We pick up a lot from the people we surround ourselves with—both positive and negative. So, if you are trying to be more successful and productive, establishing relationships with people who have what you want can help get you there.

If the people in your life aren’t at the top of their game, it might be time to reach out and network. Try to find a mentor, or become part of a mastermind group. Even if you don’t end up establishing a relationship with people in your field, anyone with a positive, encouraging attitude is likely worth your time.

If you continue to reach out and still can’t find people you connect with, you may want to consider hiring a high performance or executive coach.
