On Passion

The Bamboo Project Blog

I am writing this on a MacBook Pro, listening to music on my iPod, which seems fitting, given that I am posting about Mona Simpson's eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs. . Certainly in the days following his death, there was much attention paid to Jobs' business acumen and success. But I'm far more moved and inspired by what Mona had to say about who he was as a man, as a person, trying to live his life as we all do.

#HRTechEurope – iTalent competition (and congratulations to MIIAtech)

'I think most peoples’ favourite session on the first day of HR Technology Europe , perhaps tied with Thomas Otter’s opening keynote, was the first ever European italent competition run by Jerome Ternynck, CEO or SmartRecruiters (who won the US italent competition at the HRDemo show in the US last year). This competition is HR’s (or at least emerging recruiting technology’s) version of the X Factor.

Reality Check: Companies Aren't Developing Their Workers

The Bamboo Project Blog

An interesting article in last week's Wall Street Journal by Peter Cappelli from the Wharton School on why companies can't find the employees they need: . With an abundance of workers to choose from, employers are demanding more of job candidates than ever before. They want prospective workers to be able to fill a role right away, without any training or ramp-up time.

Should Women Give Up the C-Suite for More Flexibility?

45 Things

This week for USA Today I wrote about a new survey by More magazine showing that three-out-of-four women say they would not apply for their boss' job, partly because of the pressures that go along with it. The survey also found that 43% of the women surveyed say they are less ambitious now than they were a decade ago. And only a quarter of the 500 women ages 35 to 60 say they're working toward their next promotion.

Using Images to Find Your Career Vision

The Bamboo Project Blog

One of the most powerful ways to bypass our thinking brains is to use visuals. Images have a way of opening us up to different stories and information in ourselves that our verbal, logical brains tend to block. I've also found that images can get us talking about the issues that may be more difficult for us to discuss and they provide us with great metaphors for developing deeper insights. .

The Importance of “Know Why”?

QAspire

Knowledge industry, particularly software, is full of people who possess “ know-how ” – knowledge of how to get something done. Give them a task, and they will be able to apply their technical skills (read ‘know-how’) to accomplish it. A lot of people possess a very sound “ know-what ” – knowledge of facts, figures and methods. Give them a topic and it is likely that they know the theory and facts.

5 Questions to Assess Your Company's Professional Development Opportunities

The Bamboo Project Blog

Yesterday I posted on a new reality we need to accept--that we can't leave professional development up to our employers because they aren't providing it. This isn't true for everyone, of course. You need to evaluate your personal situation. So I thought it would be helpful to come up with some key questions to ask. . One word of caution--d on't assume that because your organization talks about professional development and the importance of learning that this is actually happening.

Managers in the Danger Zone

Planning On Inefficiency

A few years back I – accidentally – launched a new web site. I didn’t mean to, really. It just happened because what I’d planned to do in January was just more cost effective to do in December. So before I knew it I had an imperfect web site that went up without much/any planning, and customers started using it. In this happy accident something I’d suspected for a while about the value of planning became crystal clear to me.
