Similarities Between a Hobby and Work…

Perhaps we all have a hobby, maybe remember one when we had more time or possibly dream of having one. In case you are not sure, a hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure time.

Sometimes when we think of work we may or may not relate it with enjoyment. As I think of regular activities and routine accomplishments I think of when I really enjoyed the people, projects and the solutions. Our scope of business we focus on people, process and technology. We add value by articulating the implementation of the process and the technology.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to hike. The people were perfect, the process was repeatable and technology was replaced by the incredible experience. What made it perfect? We planned, we communicated, we were kind, we laughed, we encouraged, we supported, we collaborated, we respected, we contributed and we lifted… one foot in front of the other.

It was work. There were a few points I had to stop and rest. I told the others to go on, they waited. Water was required. I needed encouragement. I had to focus when it got tough. When I looked up the path after wiping my brow I could see the light through the trees and the sun and clouds in the sky. Most of all I saw the smile from the people I was with. No judgement, they knew I could do it. When I unpacked the food and assembled the lunch, the smiles grew! We all played a part. We all enjoyed the hike.

Perhaps if we approached projects like a hike.

The view at the top, the incredible lunch we shared, the laughter and the encouragement along the way and repacking the car to leave… we did it together.
