“It’s [employee engagement] about getting the best people, retaining them, nurturing a creative environment, and helping to find a way to innovate.” – Marissa Mayer, Co-founder of Lumi Labs, former CEO of Yahoo!

We have always stressed how important is employee engagement for organizations. Engaged employees find fulfillment at their job, stay motivated, and are satisfied with their job roles. They are more committed than other employees to do their job. It results in an increase in employee productivity and improves retention.

What Is Employee Engagement?

Employee engagement is not limited to measuring the amount of work done by an employee or their happiness levels. It is more than that. Forbes defines employee engagement as an emotional commitment that an employee has towards the organization and its goals. A recent report by Gallup highlights some interesting statistics on employee engagement that further corroborates its importance for organizations.

  • Almost 90% of employers think that employees leave for a better salary, but only 12% of employees actually do so
  • 70% of engaged employees understand better how to meet customer needs while only 17% of non-engaged employees feel the same
  • Their studies depict that 85% of employees are not actively engaged at work. These figures are a worldwide count

These figures are a worldwide count.

In the current scenario, where employees are still working from home, it is essential to keep them engaged. Here are some ways in which you can keep your remote teams engaged even in these unprecedented times.

Virtual Coffee Breaks

A quick coffee break with colleagues at the office is quite normal. It helps employees to refresh and take their mind off from work. Additionally, it helps to boost productivity and increase employee engagement. Often these breaks lead to brainstorming sessions, which is the ground for the generation of creative ideas and innovation.

In the current scenario, where employees cannot meet physically organize a virtual coffee break. Schedule a 15-minute slot on your team’s calendar where everyone can meet together with tea or coffee over a video call.

Frequent Check-Ins

Remote employees suffer from the fear of missing out. They often feel disconnected from their colleagues, managers, and the organization. Regular check-ins help managers and leaders stay connected with the team. Have daily and weekly team or departmental check-ins and monthly all-hands meetings with your employees. These frequent check-ins help everyone on the team stay coordinated. Moreover, it helps managers understand whether they are facing any challenges with remote work.

Remote Team-Building Activities

Virtual or online team building activities are a great way for everyone to connect, bond, and share experiences with each other. It helps create a sense of fun, togetherness, and enjoyment, even though when everyone is working remotely. It is necessary to conduct such activities to help your remote team to bond and also rejuvenate. Additionally, it is also known to have a positive impact on employee engagement and productivity.

Online games, fact sharing sessions, book clubs, quizzes, etc., are some simple virtual team building activities that can be conducted to engage your employees. Additionally, you can ask suggestions from your employees to know which activities would they prefer for team-building.

Encourage Development

As per a recent report by LinkedIn 2020 Workforce Learning Report, 94% of employees would stay with a company if they invested in their training and development.

Do you know what your team’s personal or professional goals are? If not, schedule one-on-one discussions with your team members to understand their development plans. Once you are clear on what your employees want, it will help you support your employees accordingly. It will help align individual employee goals with the company’s mission, vision, and objectives. Moreover, it makes your team members feel that you care for them, and will be there when they need your support.

Celebrate Small Wins

According to a study by Deloitte Group, employee engagement, productivity, and performance are 14 percent higher in organizations when compared with others without recognition.

Nothing encourages or motivates employees more than rewards and recognitions. It helps in improving employee engagement, increases productivity, and reduces the turnover rate. As a manager, when you recognize or reward your employees, they strive to go the extra mile. Here are some of the simple ways you can do to reward your employee’s success virtually:

  • Invest in performance management software that supports rewards and recognition functionality
  • Feature employees on the organization website
