Coming Together

The upcoming virtual HRO Today Forum will cover topics ranging from talent development to employee engagement and D&I.

By Marta Chmielowicz

Over the course of this year, HR professionals have played a critical role in leading their organizations through some of the toughest workplace challenges they’ve ever faced. They have taken unprecedented measures to keep their employees safe while navigating through significant variability in business needs; the shift to remote work; and the need for new processes around recruitment, communications, and talent management. Every day, they have shown up and worked around the clock to help their companies survive this period of uncertainty.

Now, the moment has come to share those experiences, learn from the challenges, and celebrate the successes. The HRO Today Forum, which will take place virtually on December 1-2, 2020, will bring together leading HR executives and partners to discuss how HR can create even greater impact and drive corporate strategy.

More than anything, the events of 2020 have highlighted the importance of a strong HR function -and this year’s Forum will give HR leaders the tools to prepare for the obstacles ahead from a community of dedicated industry professionals. Here is an overview of some sessions that will be featured at the event.

HR Town Hall with Peter Cappelli

What are the hottest issues and challenges in HR? How can HR drive positive business impact? What can business leaders expect from the future of work? Peter Cappelli, director of Wharton School’s Center for Human Resources, will participate in a town hall session moderated by Elliot Clark, CEO of HRO Today, to answer these questions and more. From discussing economic policies and how they may affect the workplace to highlighting trends and innovations that are transforming HR, this session will give the audience insights into today’s business climate and the opportunity to ask questions of a renowned expert in the field.

Feedback is Fuel: Creating a Culture of Feedback

Research shows that a company culture based on feedback can result in greater alignment with organizational values, improved engagement, and increased productivity -but achieving such an open culture is no easy feat. While Yelp, Glassdoor, and Amazon product reviews have normalized feedback among consumers, this does not always translate to the workforce: Employees tend to shy away from sharing their perspectives and managers often lack the skills to deliver feedback effectively. In this session, Nadine Wiernik, senior vice president of HR at Omnicom Health Group, will discuss her organization’s approach to building a feedback-friendly culture, including moving away from annual reviews; driving culture from the top; and aligning talent reviews with employee feedback.

Developing an Inclusive Talent Development Strategy

Learning and development programs play a critical role when building comprehensive diversity and inclusion (D&I) strategies. Led by Ashlee Davis, vice president and senior D&I manager at AllianceBernstein, and Robert Avinger, the company’s head of organizational development and talent management, this session will examine how organizations can leverage learning and development to take long-term, sustainable strides to meaningful change. Davis and Avinger will outline best practices around a comprehensive strategy and demonstrate how partnerships and collaboration can be leveraged for success.

Culture and Employee Engagement Pre- and Post-Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect businesses and their employees. HR is now tasked with managing through widespread uncertainty and maintaining a sense of connection in the remote environment. In this session, Brian Abrahamson, CHRO of Ryman Hospitality Properties, will share some teachings around optimizing employee engagement through a crisis, adapting training programs to remote work, and preparing businesses for reopening post-pandemic.

Panel Session: Employer Brand Matters

In today’s highly digitalized and connected world, organizations need to ensure that their messaging and branding efforts genuinely reflect their culture, values, and employer value proposition -or else risk ruining their reputation as both a company and an employer. It’s not enough to have a great story to share; companies also need to adopt a personalized approach that connects with their audience on all platforms. This panel session will address some of these challenges, bringing together practitioners and advisors to share anecdotes, success stories, and best practices.
