Working from Home Increases Productivity

Microsoft recently conducted a study that examined “how its employees were handling the myriad of changes related to working from home (WFH).” In general Microsoft found that productivity increased as a result of WFH:

  • Meeting length changed organically from 60-minutes to 30-minutes
  • Manager’s collaboration time increased 8 hours per week offset somewhat by task work decreases
  • Increased frequency of 1-1s with managers helped worker efficiency
  • Meetings shifted from morning to late afternoon
  • More night work and weekend collaboration, an average of 4 hours per week
  • More mid-day breaks (take care of children, exercise, walk the dog)
  • Social meetings increased 10% and 1-1 with other employees increased 18%
