Future of Work Agenda Newsletter: May/June 2011

Future of Work

This is the May/June 2011 issue of our free monthly newsletter, Future of Work Agenda. Much of our time did focus on history: the Churchill War Rooms, Windsor Castle, the Halls of Parliament, attending Evensong at Westminster Abbey (in the same space where a little wedding took place in late April), a walking tour of Oxford, and a Shakespeare play at the reconstructed Globe Theater—to say nothing of also visiting Edinburgh Castle and walking a bit of the Old Course at St.

The Power of Positive Priming

The Bamboo Project Blog

I'm well aware that my struggles with math throughout my lifetime began with a 3rd grade teacher who was convinced that girls couldn't work with numbers. From an article in Time Magazine on the optimism bias : Cognitive neuroscientist Sara Bengtsson devised an experiment in which she manipulated positive and negative expectations of students while their brains were scanned and tested their performance on cognitive tasks. They feel defeated before they even attend the session.

Guidelines for Leveraging Collective Knowledge and Insight

Conversation Matters

Over the years, as I have designed such meetings, I have come to rely on seven principles that work together to make the most of collective knowledge in conference settings as well as in-house meetings. Knowledge workers attending a meeting or conference need to get connected to each other before they try to construct new ideas together ( Peter Block ). When a group has come together many times, the period of connecting can be brief, but not neglected altogether.

Future Proofing Your Career

The Bamboo Project Blog

Again, this HBR article on hyperspecialists is well worth a read because it lays out a future that I think is just around the corner and that lends itself to contract work. The recession only accelerated this process as companies and individuals looked to reduce travel costs by using video chats, instant messaging and other social media tools to fuel collaborative work across space and time.

Positive Questions for Professional Development: Setting the Stage

The Bamboo Project Blog

That's what the brain research tells us and that's certainly been my experience as well. Maybe our boss told us we needed to attend a training. Think about the BEST learning experience you've ever had--a time when you felt like you were in a great learning environment that supported your growth and development. This week I'm exploring how positive questions might transform our approaches to professional development.

If a document falls in Sharepoint.

Transparent Office

I've had this conversation several times now, almost verbatim. If you can't see what other people are doing, you can't very well collaborate with them. That party would quickly face an attendance problem, just as Sharepoint has an adoption problem. You can do all the change management and attend all the conference break-out sessions you want, but you won't get adoption until you deliver transparency.

And it was a good day, time and money well spent. I don’t know the numbers, but I’d guess there were about 150 people in attendance, from all over the U.S. Kelly described the complex ecosystem of technology as a “Technium” that has its own “needs” and “wants” as it continues to evolve over time. Intriguingly, some technologies become obsolete, but not extinct; there are today more blacksmiths in the world than at any time in the past.

The 10 keys to help your managers manage employee engagement

David Zinger

The second key area is treating their people as individuals, with fairness and respect and with a concern for the employee’s well-being. The Corporate Leadership Council conclude that: “emotional commitment drives effort, emotional commitment is four times as valuable as rational commitment in producing discretionary effort. What a Rapper Can Teach You About Finding a Job

45 Things

Because I'm a journalist, I've attended presidential inaugural balls, I've been with cops as they raid a drug den and I now have interviewed a rapper. If you write well or are good at public speaking, don't just think about a job in journalism. Busy hiring managers don't have time to read — and don't care about — objective statements. any time you pick up the phone." How to Impress a Powerful Person

45 Things

Let me back up for a second and explain that election nights are notoriously one of the craziest times to work at a newspaper. If you read a leisure book, the powerful person may think you have too much free time on your hands and aren't busy enough," he says. Honestly, it may be best to take the seat the farthest away from this person because they're going to be all business, all the time." • Relax, but not too much.

Getting Away With It

True Faith HR

I would love to attend the 2011 Illinois HR Conference on August 22-24 and/or the 2011 Ohio SHRM State Conference on September 21-23. Check out the agenda for Illinois here Check out the agenda for Ohio here The quality of line-ups alone justifies attending. I get to do a lot of traveling and attend a lot of conferences. John Jorgensen (Illinois) and Steve Browne (Ohio) have put together a really stellar program for each of these states.

Looking forward – Economist Talent Management Summit

Strategic HCM

As well as Learning Technologies , the HR Directors Business Summit just before it, and the Enterprise 2.0 Summit shortly afterwards, there are a few other conferences I’ve already committed to attending / speaking / blogging at next year. Business challenges for the next generation Leadership quality is critical in times of change, whether moving from zero-growth to high-growth markets or managing a major organisational restructure.

10 Tips For Throwing A Successful Holiday Office Party

Insperity

The holidays are a fun time of year to show your employees that they’re appreciated and boost company morale. Marketing expert and blogger Shannon Mouton advises managers to make it easy for employees to attend by choosing a nearby venue. Attendance. The Process for Performance-Based Termination

Insperity

Moreover, you want to give employees plenty of time to improve, and give them the tools needed to get there. It doesn’t hurt to send a follow-up e-mail on plans of action and have the employees sign a document saying they attended the meeting, even if they sign at the bottom that they don’t agree with the decision. Make sure you document and have employees sign that they attended the meeting. “It should be enough time to improve performance, about 30 days.”

Trust and Business Success (and Hay Group International Conference)

Strategic HCM

This reduction of something this important is what I think has made organisations realise that they need to spend time thinking and talking about how trust can once more be raised. And it’s why sharing those snippets of information on Twitter (‘just about to have a cup of coffee’) IS useful communication – doing this helps to provide a basis for a shared personal connection, and once you’ve got this, the more ‘important’ factual tweets are likely to have more resonance and impact as well.

Inclement Weather: Rights and Responsibilities of Employers

Insperity

Whether it’s raining cats and dogs or your city is covered in a record amount of snow, conducting business during times of inclement weather can be a challenge for employers. While an inclement weather policy can clarify your expectations for employee attendance during bad weather, the final decision of whether to advise employees to stay home, leave early or head to work is a call for managers.

Best global HR conferences

Strategic HCM

Anyway, I thought I would share the list with you as well, and would be really interested in your other recommendations too: CIPD Annual Conference Still the main event in the UK, with increasing focus on social media, if not yet the social business. HCI Annual Summit I’ve not been out to this conference for a few years though I have attended virtually. HR Technology Wow, I had a good time at this. I may not often comment on other peoples’ blogs, but I do read a lot of them.

#HRTechEurope – CedarCrestone survey

Strategic HCM

Just in time, Lexy Martin at CedarCrestone have provided a summary of the European data for their global HR Systems Survey I encouraged you to enter earlier this year. This is the 14th time the company has run this survey which in the past has been mainly focused on North America. However nine percent of the 727 respondents are now from Europe which provides sound insights for this side of the pond as well.

With Globoforce on Social Recognition

Strategic HCM

I’ve just been attending an event with Globoforce and the Conference Board on social recognition. Using executive and research insights, supported by a series of ‘myth busters’, Mosley and Irvine provide a clear and compelling case for a more strategic approach – the time for Strategic Recognition is here.” Eg if your whole organisation is built around personal and organisational appreciation (eg using AI, strengths etc) then social recognition might fit well.

Nonprofit Performance Management Design Strategies

Reviewsnap

Do annual performance reviews help mission-driven organizations succeed or are they just another administrative function that takes time away from more important things? NonProfit HR Solutions believes that a well designed system can provide positive feedback to employees helping them do a better job and create a stronger organization.

The Growth of Digital HR

Strategic HCM

Last year, I found it such a key event that as well as the Boston conference ( see my posts ), I went back again to present on E2.0 Anyway, instead of this, I’ll be attending SAP’s HR Transformation Summit , where I’ll be speaking on much of the same thing: Social Media in the Modern HR. It’s a conference we’ve been badly lacking for a long time and should contributing to the development of HR IT as a (sub-) profession, in the same way that I think it’s seen in the US.

HR Technology, Las Vegas

Strategic HCM

I’ll be speaking at Bill Kutik’s HR Technology conference for the first time this year – so will hear the results of Lexy’s HR Systems survey there. But there’s are so many other sessions that I’m looking forward to as well. I’ll be blogging from the conference too and hope to be attending HRevolution -4 and visiting Zappos while I’m there as well.

#HRTechConf – minus three thumbs

Strategic HCM

And I did refer to some of these disagreements during my presentation (where they linked to my inputs), but ran out of time to do all. Again – this should help you consider whether you support my views about HR (and maybe even challenge your own): HR being more like the rest of the business I though John Boudreau gave a good and well-argued presentation, but I don’t agree with much of what he said. " Well, you sort of can, and I think you probably need to too.

Twittersourcing / Social HRO

Strategic HCM

I recently wrote this article for HRO Today (Global) and I thought I’d include it here as well. Attending HRO Summit Europe in 2010 , I was interested to see that, other than the ongoing display of the Twitter back channel, there was little conversation and almost nothing in speakers’ presentations about social media. I found this odd because I see social media as one of the main influences on the HR function at this point in time.

What is Workers’ Compensation?

Insperity

At the same time, benefits provided by workers’ compensation are the employee’s exclusive remedy for redress of his or her work-related injury, meaning that the employee is prohibited from seeking tort damages against the employer in civil court. True Faith HR

This weekend, I am heading to San Antonio for the 2011 Academy of Management Meeting/Conference. Put together all those Ph.Ds, the Riverwalk, and 105 degree weather, and I know you are guaranteed a good time. I have, however, not attended in a number of years. When I was a young academician straight out of grad school and attending the meetings, it was not uncommon to see "colleagues" look in your eyes than down to your name badge.

Dan Pink on Drive at the HCI Summit

Strategic HCM

Pink talked about: Netflix which pays its people well to take the issue off the table but (rare in Silicon Valley) doesn’t give its people stock options as it wants people to think about customers not stock. None of the departments were able to change direction on a dot, but individual employees created 7 mobile apps in their 10% time before any formal projects even got started. I’ve ( nearly ) completely missed out on posting on Dan Pink’s book, Drive , previously somehow.

Strategic HCM

Well certainly no goody bags with pens, post-its and stress balls (thank god). Symposium Training: Employee Engagement

Strategic HCM

One of the other things I wanted to note was that I’m also running a series of training sessions on engagement this year: The importance of ensuring an engaged workforce is rapidly increasing as more work becomes virtual, as well as team and knowledge-based. This secret is now increasingly being openly discussed and this is therefore the right time for HR to offer some alternative solutions to other business leaders.

The Winning Entry: Christine Kelly / HR Challenges at Brady Corporation

Strategic HCM

My third set of questions were around the preparedness of HR to deliver against these challenges, and it sounded as if Brady Corp’s HR teams are set up quite well for this. And here the issue is mainly about the time-lag between strategy and execution.
