A recent article from the Harvard Business Review gets straight to the point: Your interview process is likely missing something. . . critical.

“While much has been said in favor and against the value of interviews themselves,” writes HBR, “the typical Q&A job interview process fails to assess one of the most important, if not the most important, skills you should be looking for from people you hire — critical thinking.”

So what’s an interviewer to do? According to HBR, hiring managers and recruiters should consider implementing something called the “flip interview” inspired by none other than Socrates.

Yes, that’s right, Socrates.

“The oldest and still the most powerful tactic for fostering critical thinking is the Socratic method, developed over 2,400 years ago,” HBR explains. “The Socratic method uses thought-provoking question-and-answer probing to promote learning. It focuses on generating more questions than answers, where the answers are not a stopping point but the beginning of further analysis.”

To learn more about the flip interview and why Socrates should be every hiring manager’s role model, be sure to check out HBR’s article at the top of our list below of must-read articles for talent professionals. And further down our list, you can also learn how job candidates are using ChatGPT; why three well-known retailers are leading the charge on all things skills; and why 32 may be the magic number for the hours we work in a week.
