Good Leaders Are Good Learners

Developing your leadership skills and abilities is a lifelong pursuit. It’s one that requires you to never stop learning and growing as a person. Leadership means continuing to tackle new challenges, face new changes and overcome new obstacles. Here are 6 of the best strategies to help you improve your leadership skills.

1. Remain humble. Leadership starts with humility. It means remembering that your success depends on others. It means being willing to serve the people you depend on, and listening to them. A humble leader is much easier to approach, which means your team will come to you with feedback and ideas. It also allows your team to partner with you in finding solutions to problems as they arise.

2. Be a giver. It might seem backward, that giving would allow you to develop your leadership skills. But it works in a number of ways. First, your willingness to give and help and support others sets the stage for others to be willing to help and support you. It also provides opportunities for you to connect with people who need you now but may be excellent allies in the future. It also makes the world a better place, and that brings happiness and satisfaction into your life as well.

3. SWOT your leadership. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. You can use a SWOT analysis to evaluate a business decision or change in strategy, and you can also use it to evaluate your leadership. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. After you’ve finished the list, evaluate your weaknesses and look for solutions to those issues where applicable. List opportunities and threats or obstacles. Then consider what to do about those obstacles.

4. Get a mentor. Identify someone successful to use as a soundboard . What can you learn from them? Share your challenges with them, ask for feedback and take their advice.

5. Be yourself. Finding role models to inspire you might give you a confidence boost, but people can sense when you’re not being you. When someone is being true and sincere, it’s much easier to connect, build trust and work together towards a common goal.

6. Never give up. Have you noticed many of the famous men and women who changed our world all had to persevere through difficult times and often impossible odds? If they gave up at any point along their journey, we wouldn’t know their names now. Keep educating yourself. Keep pushing toward your goal.
