Three Derailers Of Success And How To Combat Them

Forbes Coaches Council

John Knotts | President and Owner of Crosscutter Enterprises — Your Success Incubator.

Success, a much sought-after and often elusive goal, is a multifaceted journey that requires perseverance, passion and purpose. Over the last 30 years, I have been learning and coaching about personal and business success. This led to my moniker of “Success Incubator” and my vision of “Leaving nothing in my wake but success.” However, three derailers of success have become abundantly apparent over my years of learning, writing and coaching about success.

While many focus on the strategies and behaviors that drive success, it is equally critical to understand the hidden derailers that divert even the most dedicated from their chosen path. Among these obstacles, three stand out for their pervasive influence and insidious nature: stress, fear and complacency. Each, in its own way, has the power to derail the aspirations of individuals and organizations alike.

Stress: The Silent Saboteur

Success often demands high performance, and with it comes the inevitable companion: stress. While stress can sometimes serve as a motivating force, pushing individuals to excel and break boundaries, it is crucial to differentiate between its two primary types: eustress (beneficial stress) and distress (harmful stress).

Eustress can act as a catalyst, driving individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. On the other hand, distress, especially when prolonged and mismanaged, can wreak havoc on one's well-being, both mentally and physically. This distinction is crucial because while some stress can propel us forward, unchecked distress can harm our health, judgment and overall performance.

At its essence, stress is our body's response to external stimuli, akin to the fluttering sensation or “butterflies” one feels before giving a public speech. While such reactions are natural, it is imperative to manage and channel this energy positively. Uncontrolled, persistent distress can lead to severe health issues, including heart disease, hypertension and mental ailments like burnout and cognitive impairment.

In the demanding world of success, where consistent high energy is essential, the effects of unchecked stress are ruinous. Hence, adopting self-care strategies becomes indispensable. These include:

• Emotional self-care: Engage in activities that allow you to process and express feelings, such as journaling or therapy.

• Mental self-care: Stimulate your intellect and reduce mental strain through reading, hobbies and meditation.

• Social self-care: Nurture social connections by spending time with loved ones and setting boundaries in relationships.

• Physical self-care: Prioritize exercise, a balanced diet and regular medical checkups for bodily health.

• Practical self-care: Bring order to daily life by managing finances, decluttering and organizing tasks.

• Spiritual self-care: Connect to a higher purpose through practices like prayer, meditation or nature immersion.

Recognizing the signs of stress and proactively integrating these self-care strategies guards against its adverse impacts, ensuring a more balanced and sustainable path to success.

Fear: The Anchor Holding You Back

Fear, while inherently protective, often becomes a barrier in our pursuit of success. Instead of merely shielding us from danger, it frequently inhibits action, curtails creativity and thwarts risk-taking—essential elements for growth and success. Such fears, be it of failure, the unknown or, ironically, success itself, can foster a limiting mindset where opportunities seem scarce. This perspective can result in hesitant decisions and a hesitancy to pursue innovative paths.

However, with the right strategies, we can harness and redirect this emotion. Cultivating inner peace and resilience as well as understanding our fears can not only enhance our overall well-being but also lead to more fulfilled and prosperous lives. By proactively addressing and mitigating the effects of fear, we can bolster our resilience, thereby fostering a mentally and physically healthier existence that is both joyful and successful.

Complacency: The Clarion Call Of Comfort

Complacency is the most subtle derailer of success. It manifests when one becomes too comfortable with current achievements, losing the drive to push for more. This state of self-satisfaction can be dangerous, as it blinds us to changing external conditions, emerging threats or new opportunities.

Resting on your laurels can quickly lead to obsolescence. Industries evolve, competitors emerge and what was once a winning strategy can become outdated. For individuals and organizations to maintain and build upon their success, they must cultivate a mindset of continuous improvement. This means constantly seeking feedback, staying curious and challenging the status quo.

Wrapping Up

While the journey to success is undoubtedly filled with external challenges, it is the internal battles with stress, fear and complacency that often prove to be the most formidable. Recognizing and addressing these derailers is not just a reactive measure; it is a proactive strategy to ensure sustained achievement. By understanding their nature, effects and strategies for mitigation, you can navigate the path to success with greater clarity, purpose and resilience.
