An aspect of remote work that is rarely talked about is what it’s like to work from home with pets! I work from home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with two roommates, four cats, one lizard, and one fish. In the news today is the unfortunate fact that many companies are cutting parental leave. Troubling numbers from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) show that the number of employers offering paid maternity leave beyond what the law requires has dropped from 53% in 2020 to only 35% now. For paid paternity leave, the number has gone from 44% in 2020 to just 27%.

Quiz: What did 53 percent of companies offer in 2020 and only 35 percent do now? Answer: paid maternity leave at a level higher than required by law. This is according to a survey from the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM), which also found drops in paternity leave policies and cut the number of weeks of paid leave while not eliminating it.
