Trend Alert: Trust In The Workplace Has Increased Since Covid

Following

Trust.

So crucial in relationships, the workplace and society overall… yet so fragile and easily broken. As a leadership and culture coach, I invest a great deal of time in helping my clients build trust with their teams.

A workplace, family, friendship, partnership and society can’t thrive without it. Trust is the solid foundation beneath one’s life and work. We value it, strive to earn it, and cherish those that are worthy of it. We all want to be trusted, to be someone people can confide in and rely on, to know someone has our back no matter what.

But do you trust your colleagues at work? If so, how much? If not, what would it take to trust them?

ResumeLab recently surveyed over 1,100 Americans to learn about their experience of trust at work.

Here are some of the highlights they uncovered:

  • We’re a very trusting bunch. 9-in-10 of the surveyed trust their manager, 85% trusted colleagues at the same level of seniority, while 4-in-5 had trust in senior management and executives.
  • The pandemic did affect our experience of workplace trust. 65% of respondents said they felt trust in their workplace had increased since the start of the pandemic.
  • There is a strong correlation between the level of education and trust in the workplace. Those without bachelor’s degrees were much less likely to trust their managers (76%), colleagues (70%), or senior executives (65%).
  • We all say we hate micromanagement, but do we truly? While a whopping 73% admitted that there is remote monitoring software on their computer only 52% were bothered by it.
  • Reputation is everything, especially in small circles. 60% have deleted an instant message out of fear of it being read. Interestingly the percentage is inversely correlated with the size of the company (with 80% deleting it at 2-3 employee workplaces, while only 26% have done so at organizations with 20+ employees)
