It’s a Saturday before a Monday holiday (Pentecost) and so of course, that’s when I needed to get a prescription. Fortunately, my area has a number of drop in clinics (like urgent care) that are open on the weekend, off I popped to the big city–15 minutes on the bus–to see a doctor. My normal doctor is within walking distance of my house, which is super handy.

Lately, I’ve been reading Schön (1979) about the power of generative metaphors. He views metaphors “as the basis for how we make sense of the world. In his view, metaphors serve our understanding of the world by drawing out similarities, and assigning meanings to a situation by making connections.”. The seminal work on metaphor is Lakoff and Johnson’s Metaphors We Live By.

I’ve received a serious medical diagnosis that’s going to require surgery and a lengthy two month recovery. Luckily, the company where I’ve worked for two years offers good insurance; but because we’re small (fewer than 50 employees) they’re not required through the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to offer medical leave and hold my job while I’m gone.
