Bill Proposes Benefits for Gig Workers

HR Daily Advisor

A bill introduced in both houses of Congress would create a pilot program to provide employment benefits to gig workers. This Portable Benefits for Independent Workers Pilot Program Act (S. 1251, H.R. 2685) would allot the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) $20 million to test portable benefits in fiscal year 2018. “[A] growing number of Americans are working without a safety net and have difficulty planning and saving for retirement, health care needs, or on-the-job injuries,” said Sen.

Want a Seat at the Table? Great, But That's Not Where Strategic HR Happens

Cornerstone On Demand

Several years ago as Chief Learning Officer in an organization, I watched a new CHRO place "business partners" from her team in each large business unit. Some of them made a difference, some never really did. Even the CHRO struggled to gain legitimacy with the executive team on matters that didn't directly involve “people stuff." Why would HR need to be involved in something like an acquisition, except to review the employees benefits of the acquired company—right?

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals revived an employee’s FMLA lawsuit June 6, finding that she had provided strong evidence that the City of Alexandria, Virginia, was actually her primar

Why A Happy Career Can Still Feel Unfulfilling

TalentCulture

Author Emily Esfahani Smith explains why the pursuit of happiness backfires–and what we can do about it in the jobs we already have. For as long as human beings have existed, they’ve yearned to know what makes life worth living. Plato described man as a “being in search of meaning,” and the first great work of literature, the 4,000 year-old “Epic of Gilgamesh,” is a hero’s quest to live a meaningful life in the face of mortality.
