A critical new year resolution leaders may want to consider is finding hidden value within your own workforce.

Workforce challenges such as skill shortages, long vacancies, burnout, low morale, weak productivity, and increasing turnover lingers from the previous year. Layer on top of those challenges a turbulent economy, makes balancing retention with labor cost cutting a very real struggle for leaders today.

Many leaders express that creating a HR strategic plan feels like building a house on quicksand. It doesn’t have to be that way. There are considerations to help you jump over the quicksand and build a strong workforce plan regardless of what happens in the world around us.

One key strategy HR Executives and Leaders can be considering right now is to find hidden value within your own workforce. To find value leadership will need to have the courage to take an earnest look at themselves and the culture they’ve influenced in past years. What may have worked before may not work in this new future.

Here are three questions to get you started.

  1. Leadership: Are there any people in leadership positions that are struggling with good communication practices, retaining and attract staff? “Command and control” or “leadership by lip service” styles have been over for a while now. But with the pandemic and remote work opportunities the door has now slammed shut on those leadership styles.
  2. Skill Optimization: Are your top skills within your existing workforce being maximized? Knowing who is doing what and how better they can be positioned is a significant tactic to consider given potential layoffs or hiring freezes. Knowing the answer to this question can put you on a track for cross training initiatives enabling a nimbler workforce approach to this new year.
  3. Flexible Scheduling: Are you still holding on to obsolete rigid staffing tactics? From recent years, what has come out loud and clear is flexibility is a must to retain and attract staff.

There are many more ways that hidden value can be uncovered within existing the workforce.
