Reviewsnap

At its core, performance management is all about giving our people the information, resources and guidance they need to achieve specific goals. Sounds simple enough. Of course, the devil is in the details. One reason performance management is so challenging—the business world isn’t static. Our organizations evolve. Our business goals and targets shift. Our customers’ needs change. Some of these changes occur swiftly while others take time. But there’s no stopping them.

The cliche that " change is constant " took on a whole new meaning for me as I experienced nothing but change after change after change. You probably did too.that seems to be the new normal.

CIPD / IASB - HR and Financial Reporting: Why the Value of Talent CAN'T appear on the Balance Sheet!

Strategic HCM

One of the things the CIPD Valuing Your Talent report suggests is that the onus is now on the IASB to explain why the value of human resources cannot appear on the balance sheet as an asset in its right, rather than just as a cost on the P&L. I’m not sure why they think this is the case, but anyway, in case the IASB is struggling, here are some inputs from my 2006 book which describe why putting people on the balance sheet isn’t just difficult but actually quite impossible.

“I failed in some subjects in exam, but my friend passed in all. Now he is an engineer in Microsoft and I am the owner of Microsoft.” — Bill Gates Failure is often a difficult pill to swallow. We feel angry, humiliated and defeated when we don’t succeed, especially in a culture that seems to shove other people’s success in our face on an hourly basis. But what we don’t consider is that failing is often a signal of great things to come.

10 Building Blocks: What is Your Deeper Why of Employee Engagement?

David Zinger

The why of working. Here are four stories that influenced my movement into employee engagement: My father, a railway executive, became cynical and frustrated with his work. It literally drove him to drink and as a child I would listen to his workplace stories of being thwarted and stymied. I was pleased that later in his life he found his way out of this work-related Dante’s Inferno. Burt, a production technician I worked with hated his job, management, the company and his co-workers.

Mission Critical: Leveraging Learning Engineering to Drive Digital Transformation

Speaker: Trish Uhl, Founder of Owl's Ledge LLC and the Talent & Learning Analytics Leadership Forum

Digital is disrupting every part of an organization's value chain at a record pace, creating a critical need to transform operations and employees' ways of working. Formal training alone can't keep up; it's often too slow, too generic, inconvenient, inefficient, unduly expensive and lacks or lags methods for measuring business-related effectiveness. Trish Uhl show you how to start leveraging Learning Engineering, a multidisciplinary approach that combines modern technology, data analytics, decision science, learning sciences and change management with human-centered engineering design methodologies to ultimately deliver targeted learning outcomes and business results that keep pace with the business and merge learning into the flow of work and lead Digital Adoption.

CIPD - Valuing Your Talent

Strategic HCM

There’s also more I disagree with in the CIPD’s attempt to re-establish Accounting for People through a project called Valuing Your Talent and which was launched with another research report at the CIPD conference. Despite the change in name, this project is basically recycling Accounting for People, and adding an additional, dangerous twist.

While the incidence of accountants, engineers, management consultants and the like making it to the top of corporations is high, the number of HR professionals taking the CEO slot remains decidedly low. CIPD - Talent analytics and big data

Strategic HCM

In my last post I argued that the CIPD has got things wrong in arguing for the focus on analytics in their new framework. Well I disagreed with this top-level focus, and I disagree with the detail in their new research report, ‘ Talent analytics and big data - the challenge for HR ’ as well. There are two main things I disagree with here: Firstly, I’m not against analytics or big data - I’m strongly in support of using both things.
