A recent Harvard Business Review article pointed out something startling – whistleblowers are a good thing for companies. In fact, according to the HBR article, “The more employees use internal whistleblowing hotlines, the less lawsuits companies face, and the less money firms pay out in settlements.” Seriously. If we step back from this for a moment, the conclusion doesn’t seem as counterintuitive as it first appears.

‘Not good enough’ – a phrase we all dread to our core. No matter who you are and where you are in life. We try to hide our flaws more often than confronting and resolving them. When it comes to Managers, they strive to portray the picture-perfect image of themselves and doesn’t necessarily accept a different view when they commit mistakes. A mistake from the manager could cost the company a lot and risks the reputation of the company.

Karen Shell watched intently when the Senate Judiciary Committee held confirmation hearings in January for the next U.S. attorney general, a decision that could dramatically impact her day-to-day work. As the director of compliance for National Seating and Mobility (NSM), her interest in these hearings might not be clear at first, but Shell says a shakeup in the Department of Justice's philosophy and focus could seriously affect business.

Have you done any time? I asked the unsuspecting young lady sitting next to me. She just stared at me not sure if I was joking or serious, and really not wanting to engage either way. . Old recruiters tend to be a bit forward. Their time has worn away the niceties and cultural norms society places upon us when you go through the system. Mine have been gone for a while now. Have you done time?”, Is me asking you, if you have ever worked in staffing? Corporate TA isn’t time!

A few weeks ago, I published a Time Well Spent from our friends at Kronos about recognition and rewards. It was about the boss who gave every member of the team an ugly holiday sweater. I hope you’ll check it out if you haven’t already. This one reminded me of another aspect of rewards and recognition that we might forget. And that’s all rewards do not have to be personal. What I mean by that is, the goal of rewards and recognition is for the recipient to feel the value (of the sentiment).

It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…. Staff selling multi-level marketing products at work. I manage a team of seven for a small advertising agency. We’re located in a rural-ish area. Our HQ is in a major city about seven hours away. I got promoted to manager after our last manager retired. I’m younger than most of my team (I’m 33) but we’ve all gotten along so well in the past that I’m at a loss for what to do with this issue.

As Sophocles said, “Heaven never helps the man who will not act.”. Legend has it that if you drop a frog into hot water, it jumps out. But put the same frog in cold water and heat it gradually, and the frog stays put. Lulled into complacency, it simply boils to death. For business leaders, the teaching is relevant and profound. As change heats the pot that forms our world, our impulse is to resist change. But this could be a mistake.

Paid time off is one of the most popular benefits a business can offer. Whether you’re a large employer or a small mom-and-pop shop, employees appreciate being valued with compensated days off. When it comes to how much time off you can offer on a paid basis, the number of days can vary greatly. But most agree, the more time off you can offer, the more competitive you can be in the marketplace.
