Employee morale. Wikipedia defines it as job satisfaction or a feeling of well-being in the workplace. But morale offers more than just happiness. Research shows a clear link between employees’ morale and better job performance. Companies that use employee morale boosters see a benefit to their bottom line. The opposite is also true. Gallup estimates that actively disengaged employees (i.e. low morale) cost the U.S. $483 billion to $605 billion each year in lost productivity.

This article originally appeared in TLNT. I've spent my career on learning: It's in my job title. While the phrase “ future of work ” is a buzzy phrase that means many things to many people, I see it as a transition point. Every couple of decades, there’s a whole new version of the future of work. Take the Industrial Revolution in the 1700-1800s as a recent example. Workers went from creating goods painstakingly by hand to automating some of this through new manufacturing processes.

Disruptive companies aren’t created by accident. In order to hold this badge of honor, a business must successfully change how people think and behave. This is quite a tall order, especially for those companies just getting off the ground. While there’s a recipe for each business that makes it unique, only the top companies deliver innovative ideas that destroy all old ways of doing something.

In the digital world we live in, we spend a TON of time work on computers and mobile devices. Screens aren’t just part of our work life–they are how we interact with most people during the course of the workday. This isn’t a natural experience for us and it’s now how we were designed to operate, which means we must take care or we’ll inevitably run into issues with our health.

It is important to remember that a business is not a solo entity. It needs to rely on others to thrive, be it suppliers, customers or employees. Businesses are social, and HR managers and personnel are at the forefront of ensuring it is. After all, businesses are human-led, and therefore human resources is a critical aspect, but it is not the only support system an enterprise needs to succeed. .

Who would you rather work for: Apple or Agility? Google or Galantis? Make no mistake, brand awareness has a huge impact on people’s desire to work for one company over another. It’s been proven in study after study: employees who feel engaged at a company are more inclined to stick around longer. Companies with engaged employees also have 202% better performance than companies with low employee engagement. And while there’s a lot of focus in online content around different tactics to engage employees and offer them professional development opportunities at work, there’s less advice about how to support them at different stages of that employee growth.
