Is There Hope for a Job Hopper?

Evil HR Lady

Dear Evil HR Lady, I am 48 years old with an MBA in business management from a non-traditional university. In my younger years, I would skip around from job to job as boredom would quickly overtake the excitement of a new career path. Today, I find myself unemployed after being part of a department-wide downsizing a year and a half ago. For the past year and a half, I have been self-employed and have worked to build name recognition, but now I want to go back to being an employee.

A 4-Step Process to Learning When Your Organization Isn't That Into It

The Bamboo Project Blog

I'm sorry to say that I've been spending a lot of time lately with staff working in organizations that aren't that into professional development. Because of time and financial constraints, training is not a priority and there is little attention paid to ensuring that staff have the skills and knowledge to perform their jobs. The best these people can hope for from their employers is that they will be allowed to sit in on a webinar or attend a 1-day training session once a year.

We Need Hopeless Employee Engagement

David Zinger

Now versus Hope. I have no hope for employee engagement. Hope is an emotional trap that gets us focused on the future. We need less hope and more gumption and robust engagement with work. Let the future take care of itself by engaging in the task in front of you right now, connecting strongly with others at work, and strengthening your connections to results and your organization.

Asking the Right Question: "What Do You Need to Change Your Life?"

The Bamboo Project Blog

A Facebook friend shared an excellent link today to an article in The Economist on a new study about the most effective ways to serve the homeless: Broadway tried a brave and novel approach: giving each homeless person hundreds of pounds to be spent as they wished. According to a new report on the project by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a think-tank, it worked—a success that might offer broader lessons for public-service reform and efficiency.

Are You Putting Off Having a Baby in This Bad Job Market?

45 Things

Anyone who has ever been pregnant on the job knows it's not easy. You try not to barf in meetings. Your feet get so swollen you can't get on any shoes besides your Nikes, and those make a less-than-professional impression. In the early part of your pregnancy, you can't think of eating without getting queasy. When that passes, you can't stop eating. Some co-workers, who think they're so darn funny, can't decide which is bigger: You or the Goodyear blimp.

I suggested that participating in conversation may often be a better way to measure Enterprise 2.0 initiatives than trying to calculate ROI and noted Jay Cross’ comments on Jack Phillips ROI methodology as an example of this difficulty.
