INTERVIEW: Dave Ulrich on How To Win the War for Talent

HR Bartender

The term “war for talent” was first used in 2001 in a Harvard Business Press book by the same name. It refers to a competitive landscape in recruiting and retention. Given the recent shift to a candidate-driven market and other indicators like low unemployment, the use of war for talent seems very appropriate. Dave Ulrich and his colleagues have a new book out on the topic titled “ Victory Through Organization: Why the War for Talent is Failing Your Company and What You Can Do About It ”.

Why HR Needs a Marketing Strategy

Cornerstone On Demand

When most of us think of marketing, we think of promoting a business: brand creation, strategic positioning, social media, advertising, pricing, etc. Almost every business makes a strong investment in these practices; and few (if not none) could exist without it. So couldn't these same principles be applied to a line of business? I think so—and Human Resources, in particular, could benefit from some marketing.

how can we get employees to follow our strict time-of-arrival policy?

Ask a Manager

A reader writes: I work at a nonprofit that operates in a very traditional office setting: business professional dress code, strict lunch hours, and a strict 9-5 day. In theory, this is done for efficiency and to allow employees to feel like they have more separation between their work and personal life. New staff tend to struggle with it when they first arrive since many other nonprofits they have worked for are more flexible about arrival times, making up time, PTO, etc.

Dear Timmy, I recently applied for a position that I’m perfect for! A recruiter from the company contacted me and scheduled me for an interview with the manager. I went, the interview was a little over an hour and it went great! I immediately followed up with an email to the recruiter and the manager thanking them, but since then I’ve heard nothing and it’s been weeks. I’ve sent follow-up emails to both the recruiter and the manager and I’ve gotten no reply.

Why You Shouldn’t Rely on Generational Labels in the Workplace

Cornerstone On Demand

It has become the norm to identify and categorize people along generational lines. Jessica Kriegel, in her book Unfairly Labeled , states that we create generational stereotypes because we seek to find certainty in an uncertain world and labels can be a shortcut to understanding. We often go beyond the idea of trends or patterns and begin to identify generational differences almost as laws of the universe.
