Are Your Employees Living Your Company Values

HR Bartender

I had the opportunity to speak with some senior HR professionals and CEOs during this year’s Great Place to Work Small and Medium Business Conference. Every single person I spoke with said their biggest challenge is managing growth. Not just growth in terms of products, services and customers. But growth in terms of employees and morale. It occurred to me that the key to successful growth is values. Great places to work are built on company values and how they are defined.

Cornerstone On Demand

Dear ReWorker, I'm an HR manager of a small company. My boss lives on the East Coast. His assistant, who works in the West Coast office with me, is up for her first annual review. I think she seems good and should get a traditional merit increase, but my boss is telling me she's terrible and doesn't deserve a raise. He hasn't ever given me anything to write her up for, and the only solid criticism I can get out of him is that she, "doesn't anticipate [his] needs." I think he is out of line.

The Difference Between Training, Facilitation and Presentations

HR Bartender

I’ve been going to a lot of conferences lately and noticed that people are using the terms training, facilitating, and presenting interchangeably. And for the purposes of a conversation, it might be perfectly acceptable to use the terms in that way. But when it comes to execution, the terms are different and the word could create expectations for the audience. For example: Training is the action of teaching a person a specific skill or type of behavior.

Want a High-Performance Culture? Look out for “Hostages”

CultureIQ

We’ve all seen the LinkedIn meme about investing in employees who might leave your organization. It goes something like this: CFO to CEO: What if we invest in our people and they leave? CEO to CFO: What if we don’t and they stay? It’s an imaginary question, and a pretty cheeky one, at that. But it points to a very important truth about hiring and developing a workforce: you can’t control when employees will decide to leave your company, but you can control their incentives to stay.
