We Were Named a Top Place to Work in Ohio - Here's What We Think Works

HR consulting team Ohio best place to work

A Slice of HR was named one of the top places to work in Ohio by Ohio Business Magazine! We were thrilled to be in the company of so many other outstanding Ohio companies, like Mason Cincinnati School of Music, Harvest Tax & Accounting Services, and Barnes Dennig Accounting.

What's our secret? Well, there are no secrets, per se. But here are a few things that we think make us stand out.

As an HR consulting firm, we understand how important it is to prioritize the well-being and happiness of our staff. That's why we offer a range of benefits, perks, and opportunities to help our employees grow personally and professionally.

Our Hybrid Working Model

Our hybrid working model is a key factor in our success. It allows our team to work within their ideal hours and maintain a healthy work-life balance. We believe that happy and fulfilled employees are essential to the growth of our company, and are committed to fostering a positive work environment that supports the well-being of everyone.

Meagan is a great example of someone with a lot going on but is still always giving 100% inside and outside of the office. When she started with us, she had twin two-year-olds, so she worked the bulk of her hours when the children were with Grandma two days per week. She also popped in between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. to get her to 20+ hours per week without putting kids in childcare for a third or fourth day. It was a win-win because with recruiting, it was an ideal time to reach candidates, and it worked well for her in terms of maximizing her time with kids and work.

A Community-Based Approach

We are a community of people who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of others and the clients we work with. Our own Slice of HR (Slice)community, our own team, is key. We are always ready to step in and support each other when needed.

We have nine employees as well as contractors and partners and we collaborate on all things!

When we get a new client, they aren't assigned an individual consultant - they are assigned a pod, complete with a HR Director, 2 HR Consultants, and a Talent Acquisition Pro. This works well for our clients and gives us even more flexibility in our work.

The pod meets weekly as a unit to noodle on client issues and ensure coverage. Each consultant works with their pod leader at least weekly as a 1:1 to check in that everyone is getting the support they need.

Beyond our internal team, we are also deeply committed to the community we serve. It’s not that there’s one day of the year when we all go out and do something for the community—this is embedded in the people we hire. Tiesha uses her flexibility to mentor teenage girls through a nonprofit, Butterfly Support Services. Kt is in charge of nearly everything in the local high school, and the mayor appointed her to the Recreation Commission Board.

We recognize that our success is tied to the success of the community, and we are dedicated to making a positive impact. At Slice, we understand that work is just one of the many priorities our team is juggling. In return, we invest nearly 2% of our profits into the organizations and causes that are important to the team.

Hanging in Our Coworking Space

One of the biggest impacts on our culture is having a home to call our own. We purchased a turn-of-the-century farmhouse and renovated it into a shared worksite. Remote or on-site client work is the majority of what we do. However, we needed a place to bond, collaborate, and celebrate.

One of the pod's teams is up on Wednesdays so they have at least one day of comradery and support. We order Moe's (which is kind of a joke because one of our members is vegan and obsessed) and play oldies (because Colleen loves 80s music and Meagan loves bubble gum Oldies). Colleen had to introduce these younguns to Stevie Nicks!

As we would tell our clients, perks are differentiators but the organizations that win top people invest in them. Every employee on our team is paid at or above market rates, provided employee medical insurance, paid medical/maternity leave, and gets a match on IRA contributions—even if they work part-time.

We’re all about trust, wholeheartedness, and slashing (almost) everything with a healthy dose of humor.

We understand that our team members are unique individuals with passions and interests outside of work.

We want to extend a sincere thank you to Ohio Business Magazine for acknowledging our hard work, and to our employees for their continued dedication to making A Slice of HR an exceptional place to work!
