Under the Influence — Drugs and Alcohol at Work Live Webinar

Drugs and Alcohol at Work Live Webinar

Millions of Californians use alcohol and/or cannabis on a regular basis — even as a new law impacts California employers’ pre-employment testing practices. CalChamber’s latest webinar can help employers protect their workplaces from drug and alcohol use.

Meanwhile, others may use and/or abuse prescription narcotics — in 2022, for instance, more than 13.6 million prescriptions for opioids were written, according to the California Department of Public Health — and some may use more illicit drugs.

Although much of this drug and alcohol use is legal and responsible, any substance use may pose health and safety risks for employees at work which triggers a need for employers to create polices around drug and alcohol use at work. While California law recognizes the legitimate need to implement and enforce a drug- and alcohol-free workplace and authorizes employers to do so, it also imposes limitations on how these policies may be enforced, aiming to strike a balance between workplace safety and productivity and the protection of employees’ rights and privacy.

Join CalChamber’s employment law experts in the 90-minute “Under the Influence — Drugs and Alcohol at Work” webinar where they’ll share employer guidelines for effectively and legally implementing and enforcing a drug- and alcohol-free workplace, and provide real-world, practical examples to help you confidently and legally protect your workplace from drug and alcohol use.

Our California employment law experts will discuss:

  • Creating and implementing an alcohol- and drug-free workplace policy;
  • Conducting pre-employment drug screenings;
  • Conducting drug and alcohol screenings on current employees;
  • Special considerations for cannabis use;
  • Handling reasonable accommodation and leave requests related to rehabilitation; and
  • Discipline for drug and alcohol use, including last chance agreements.
