If you think accountability is about consequences, you’re part of the problem!

It’s no surprise the office has become a nightmare of people playing the blame game and passing the buck.

You know it’s bad when even business leaders will do anything to take accountability.

As we gear up for our next edition of Leadership Live on the topic of accountability, let’s dive headfirst into the discussion.

Busting the Myth of Accountability as a Bad Word

Let’s set the record straight.

Accountability is not a bad word. And if you think it is all about punishment or consequences, you’re doing it wrong!

It’s no WONDER people don’t want to take accountability if we frame it this way.

Everywhere you look, people talk about it as if it’s all about nagging or waving a finger at bad behavior.

But that’s completely missing the point.

And it’s the reason why nobody on your team wants to take accountability.

Everything You Know About Accountability is Wrong

What if we thought of it as working together with someone who’s helping us grow?

What if we thought about accountability as someone reminding us of what’s most important?

Real accountability isn’t about someone else giving us a slap on the wrist.

Take the classic example of going to the gym.

Say you have an accountability buddy or even a team leader who is holding you accountable to that goal.

If they’re TRULY holding you accountable, they won’t criticize you if you skip gym day.

What they WILL do is remind you why you wanted to go to the gym in the first place!

They’ll echo your own words back to you…reminding you that it’s important for your health, so you can be in good shape for a long time for your family, etc.

REAL accountability is about working together to GROW toward a positive goal.

Ask yourself. Which version of accountability gets YOU more excited?

Getting Excited About Accountability

People will never hold themselves accountable if they view It as a bad thing.

But if we start talking about how REAL accountability is about growing together, we have the chance to watch our teams actually get excited.

We all have dreams and aspirations. Whether it’s earning a new raise, becoming a more valuable member of the team, getting a promotion, learning a new skill or getting in shape, everybody wants to grow.

If we want our people to get excited about accountability, we have to remind them that accountability is the path to get there.

It’s a critical part in how we can help each other reach our full potential.

Why is This Important Now?

As we navigate a world that’s constantly changing, businesses need teams that are not just doing their jobs but truly owning their work and results.

This is where our upcoming LEADERSHIP LIVE episode comes in, featuring an engaging conversation hosted by Steve Lowisz with esteemed guests like Katherine Weaver, Felisa Stockwell, and RJ Grimshaw.
