“How old are you? Seriously, what’s your age?” Pretty straightforward isn’t it? If that’s how I introduced myself, how would you react? I bet you’d be “offended” or put off because you would wonder why that had any bearing whatsoever on our meeting. The next thought in your head would be wondering why in the world I would start a conversation in such a rude way.

When I graduated from college, I remember being so excited to start my job search. I was convinced that I was not going to settle for a job and that I was going to search until I found the right fit for me. Though I was determined, finding the right fit took a lot longer than I expected. Granted, I was not in any big rush. I had put my two weeks into my current job and was going to enjoy a break without working for the first time since I was fifteen.

Okay, you’ve selected your HR tech solution. You’ve signed the paperwork. Now it’s time for implementation–are you ready? . Technology implementations, regardless of whether you’re using Oracle, SAP, Workday, or someone else, are challenging. That’s because the average HR leader only gets a chance to do this maybe once or twice in their career.

HR Compliance is like a giant game of whack-a-mole. Once you think your company is compliant with all policies and procedures documented and in place, there’s a new or amended law, regulation, or final rule that pops up landing you back at ‘start.’ There are shifts, interpretations, and balancing acts to understanding compliance changes. Keeping up is not easy and it’s very time consuming.

There’s no denying the appeal of video. When I’m doing research for a home project, planning a purchase or trying to teach myself how to play a new board game, I prefer to watch an engaging video rather than read through text or scan images. Not surprisingly, many job seekers have the same preference as they research and engage with potential employers to determine which will suit their career aspirations.

According to the World Economic Forum, it’ll take 108 years to close the gender pay gap. The Global Gender Gap Report also found that the second largest area of gender disparity is in economic participation and opportunity, at 42%. This and other recent studies confirm that the pervasiveness of gender inequality not only hinders women’s ability to advance, it’s also costing the entire global economy.

There are a lot of definitions of employee engagement out there, and they’re all missing the mark. It’s not that they are inaccurate—it’s that the way we define engagement is making it harder, ironically, for us to solve the problem of disengagement. Here’s what’s happening: Engagement is most commonly defined as the level of “emotional commitment or connection” an employee has to the organization and its goals.

As a child, I dreaded the ubiquitous school class group project. Invariably someone in our group took charge, someone else did nothing, and perhaps one or two others and I did all the work for little or no recognition. Fast forward to today, and I now view group work in an entirely new light. It’s not easy to ensure everyone has a voice and can contribute to truly collaborative group work, but when it happens, the effort pays off in impressive ways.

Can you see two sides to every issue ? Not everyone can. A lot of people see things as either my way or the wrong way. And studies are showing that we’re getting a lot more divided in our thinking. The Atlantic and Predictwise took a look at the political divide by county–but instead of saying “this county is red, this county is blue” they looked at “partisan prejudice.” They found that.
