Today, I’m doing something a little different on the blog. My longtime friends Jamie Notter and Maddie Grant have just published a new book titled “ The Non-Obvious Guide to Employee Engagement.” They present a unique perspective that I think you’ll find interesting. What follows is a short interview I did with Jamie over email to give you a flavor of what’s in the book.

Keeping up is not easy and it’s very time consuming.

Recently, I spent a day with 50 HR-tech executives from Fortune 100 companies. When I asked, “Who has an ongoing project using AI?” about 40 percent of the group raised their hands. When I asked, “Who has a people-analytics team?”, it was more like 60 percent of the group. Indeed, people analytics is coming to a theater near you. People-analytics teams range in size from 2 percent to 7 percent of the total HR workforce.

Saturday Spark #3. By Susan Hunt Stevens. For the past few weeks, I’ve been transitioning our children’s playroom to a room for teens. Our family challenge was to try and do it without buying anything new and coming out economically even, spending no more than we were able to generate by selling things in it. The result is that I’ve been a very active user of some tools of the circular economy: namely Freecycle.org, Goodwill, Craigslist and for the first time, Facebook Marketplace.

News flash: The feds don’t like it when you bring in “applicants” for a “working interview” – and then refuse to pay them for the work they perform. The lesson is going to cost a Nashville dental practice $50,000 after a settlement in federal district court. The practice will pay $50k in back wages and liquidated damages to 10 employees for FLSA minimum wage, overtime and recordkeeping violations.

In most states, non-competition agreements between and an employer and employee are legal, as long as there is some form of consideration (like money) to support them. But, what about a no-hire or no-poach agreement; e.g., a ‘contract’ between two businesses where one (or both) agrees not to hire the others’ employees during their business relationship and for some time after it ends?
