I was also interested that at the same time I was tweeting about this, someone else at the conference tweeted about the perspective of an employee in another Asian company suggesting that the Western concept of straight talk is simply an excuse to be rude – something which I think is often true.

She noted that she signed up for Twitter only recently, and she was unfamiliar with many social media tools that might, for example, restrict protected information during the recruiting process. When I looked at the title of the presentation, " Social Networking in the Workplace: Untangling the Web of Employer Risks, Employee Rights, and Management Best Practices" and the person presenting the session was a lawyer, my hackles were immediately raised.

During a recent chat my project social partner Dave Ryan and I agreed that HR certification doesn’t automatically confer expertise in all the myriad facets of HR and a new post topic was born! A benefits expert is not typically a recruiting expert, for example, and a labor relations specialist is not a talent manager. Ditto for benefits, recruiting, labor relations and pretty much everything HR is responsible for.
