We’ve talked about the job reference before on HR Bartender, but this is a new situation. Although I quit my last job, my boss and I did not leave on the best of terms, and I would not want her to be a reference for me. I sent references per the request of a company who interviewed me, but they came back and asked if they could speak with her. Many companies have policies that say managers cannot provide references for former employees.

When it comes to providing job references , I’m a bit torn. On the other hand, I’ve always thought that your references will all say that you’re perfect, so why bother? I’m in the middle of interviewing for an upper-level research technician position and I’ve discovered that my reference list is out of date. Regardless of your personal opinion about references, if you’re looking for a job, you should have your references ready. Keep your job references current.

I mentioned in my #SHRM16 wrap-up that I spoke at a pre-conference workshop on social media strategies. If an employee’s current manager refuses to provide a letter of reference, even if employee is in good standing, is that an EEOC violation ? Are reference letters, recommendations, and endorsements considered the same thing? A substantive letter of reference or affirmative recommendation has more business and legal significance than a ‘LinkedIn’ endorsement or the like.
