Don’t Contact My Boss for a Job Reference – Ask #HR Bartender

HR Bartender

We’ve talked about the job reference before on HR Bartender, but this is a new situation. Although I quit my last job, my boss and I did not leave on the best of terms, and I would not want her to be a reference for me. I sent references per the request of a company who interviewed me, but they came back and asked if they could speak with her. Many companies have policies that say managers cannot provide references for former employees.

Job References Are Out of Date – Ask #HR Bartender

HR Bartender

When it comes to providing job references , I’m a bit torn. On the other hand, I’ve always thought that your references will all say that you’re perfect, so why bother? I’m in the middle of interviewing for an upper-level research technician position and I’ve discovered that my reference list is out of date. Regardless of your personal opinion about references, if you’re looking for a job, you should have your references ready. Keep your job references current.

Are Companies Obligated to Write Reference Letters – Ask #HR Bartender

HR Bartender

I mentioned in my #SHRM16 wrap-up that I spoke at a pre-conference workshop on social media strategies. If an employee’s current manager refuses to provide a letter of reference, even if employee is in good standing, is that an EEOC violation ? Are reference letters, recommendations, and endorsements considered the same thing? A substantive letter of reference or affirmative recommendation has more business and legal significance than a ‘LinkedIn’ endorsement or the like.

Accomplish Your Recruiting Goals: Think Like a Marketer

HR Bartender

We all know recruiting is tough right now. While the model talks about media in terms of marketing media, we can use the principles for our recruitment marketing. Just in case you missed it, a few months ago, I wrote an article about the things that recruiters want from job seekers. Recruiters Must Learn Talent Development (and vice versa)

HR Bartender

Last year, I saw something at a conference that surprised me. Recruiting is tough right now. Conversely, recruiters need to understand talent development.

Do you pay your employees more for referring Diverse candidates?

The Tim Sackett Project

By “Diversify”, I’m not talking about diversity of thought, but to recruit a more diverse workforce in terms of ethnic, gender and racial diversity. Clearly, by bringing in more individuals from underrepresented groups in your workforce, you’ll expand the “thought diversification”, but for those HR Pros in the trenches and sitting in conference rooms with executives behind closed doors, diversification of thought isn’t the issue being discussed.
