In 2008 KM was alive and well at GM. GM was brought down by a flawed strategy, but an organization’s strategy is clearly a product of the knowledge that exists within its walls. The knowledge existed within GM to develop a more competitive strategy. But between 2000 and 2008 knowledge management did not help GM bring that organizational knowledge together in a way that could have saved it from bankruptcy.

The customary approach to accomplish adaptation is a two step process, 1) the originator tells the receiver (often in a presentation format) what his/her team did and why, and then engages in a Q&A with the receiver to explain anything further that is needed, and 2) the receiver takes those ideas back home, then adapts them into his or her own context.
