The Future of Talent Management

HR Bartender

When I worked in an office environment, I tried to spend a lot of time walking around. It was a great opportunity to be visible and chat with employees. It also got me into the habit of always having a notebook with me. Employees would ask questions and I needed some way to remember. Fast forward to today, I still carry a notebook with me to jot down ideas. The good news is that I ran across some notes from a presentation about the future of HR that I want to share with you.

Employee Engagement: 3 Things We All Want from Work

HR Bartender

Organizations are constantly asking themselves “What do our employees want?” And if they’re not asking that question, they should be. The answer helps organizations create a workplace that employees want to be a part of. That aids employee engagement. It helps companies create jobs and programs that employees enjoy. It also allows employees to do their best work (and, no, not more creative loafing). Last year, I worked on a series of articles with our friends at Kronos about this very topic.

How Organizations Can Address Email Fatigue

HR Bartender

I ran across this article from CNBC on how many hours Americans spend on email each day. It’s an interesting read. The article says that we spend 209 minutes a day checking work email and 143 on personal messages for a total of 352 minutes. That translates to roughly 5 hours and 52 minutes each day (almost 6 hours a day). I have a couple of takeaways from this. If employees only answer work emails at work, then they’re spending a little over 3 hours a day on work email.

Organizations are Focused on Using People Analytics As a Competitive Advantage

HR Bartender

As organizations spend more time trying to recover from the business impact of COVID-19 , they will turn to data to help them. It makes total sense. Organizations have been using data to help them grow their businesses for years. This will be no different. What may be different is the type of data that organizations collect and how they analyze and make decisions from the data. Earlier this year, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) held its first People Analytics conference.

This one was special because we applied for (and received) special passes as part of NASA’s social media squad.

HR Technology: 13 Concepts HR Pros Needs to Know

HR Bartender

It’s no secret. I love technology. In our small business, we rely on technology to extend our capabilities and provide an agile response to customer needs. That helps us remain competitive. But the more I learn about technology, I realize there’s still a lot to learn. On some level, technology reminds me of the reason I entered the human resources profession. It’s always changing and evolving. It’s always getting better.

Technology: Do Not Let Your Company Become Obsolete

HR Bartender

While you know that I love my technology, there are some activities that I enjoy doing what some might term “old school”. Like I enjoy having a paper planner. I take handwritten notes during conferences. Some might say that I’m behind the times. Others will cite the research that says writing things down helps with retention. Frankly, I like it and it works for me. That’s what counts. And I’m not the only one.

Staffing Shortages Are Not a Customer Service Excuse

HR Bartender

I’m here to deliver some tough love to businesses today. As a HR pro, I totally understand that the recruitment market is tough. I hear the same stories from recruiters who are posting job openings and getting zero responses. I also understand the pressure to deliver revenue and profits. Whether you’re in the public or private sector, for profit or not-for-profit, there’s an expectation that the financial goals of the organization will be met.

HR Departments Should Have Data Policies

HR Bartender

Human resources departments are filled with data. About applicants, candidates, employees, and alumni. This data includes addresses, health information, and social security numbers. HR has assessment data and information from drug/criminal/credit background screening. They have data about vendors – past, current, and future. HR has business intelligence data related to jobs, salaries, benefits, etc. Some of this data is online and some is good old-fashioned paper.

Ageism In the Workplace – Ask #HR Bartender

HR Bartender

Last year marked the 50 th anniversary of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) , which prohibits discrimination against individuals 40 years of age or older. In a survey from AARP, nearly 2 out of 3 workers have experienced some form of age discrimination or age bias. Ageism is a huge issue for organizations, especially given today’s labor market. Today’s reader note is a long story, but given the statistics above, it’s one that I believe is happening more than we realize.
