10 Reasons Humans are Terrible at Hiring (and How AI Can Help)

Lighthouse

Last year, Amazon shuttered an algorithm the team was developing because it realized it was biased. The algorithm was developed by the company’s engineers to look at high-performing employee profiles and then select the right candidates from the firm’s resume database. The problem?

Using Technology to Level Up Recruiting

How AI Can Positively Influence Diversity and Inclusion

Lighthouse

Last month news broke that an AI-powered facial recognition technology used by law enforcement was actually biased against, well, pretty much everyone other than white men. Why All the AI Research You’re Reading is Dead Wrong

Lighthouse

When I was writing my book, Artificial Intelligence for HR , I thought very hard about doing a study on AI adoption by HR professionals. I wanted to understand the degree of penetration into today’s workplace, and the book was my perfect “excuse” as a researcher to explore the topic. However, in my digging I ran across half a dozen studies that were asking similar questions, and all of them had wildly different results.

Designing Equitable Performance: How to Create Fair, Inclusive Assessments

Speaker: Aubrey Blanche & Sahra Kaboli-Nejad

We are all susceptible to bias and strive to mitigate it through reading, taking classes, and participating in trainings - yet, it seems like these aren’t driving the change we need. Women tend to receive vague, personality-based feedback, where men tend to receive performance related feedback. Work completed by Black men is more likely to be rated as lower quality than White men. And Black women face these overlapping biases in even more extreme ways. So what can we do to address the inequities in the system? Look at the system itself - are we designing an equitable performance system that benefits everyone? Join Culture Amp’s Global Head of Equitable Design and Impact, Aubrey Blanche, along with Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Lead Sahra Kaboli-Nejad, to discuss how we can re-evaluate our performance management systems. We will discuss the benefits of designing a system at every level (individual, manager, and organization) to help mitigate bias and ultimately create a system that finally succeeds at what it is supposed to do - improve performance.

AI Concepts: What is Moravec’s Paradox and Why Should You Care?

Lighthouse

In the 1980s, Hans Moravec and other AI researchers discovered a curious finding that we now know as Moravec’s Paradox. Essentially, AI can very easily learn to do things that are “hard” for humans, such as advanced statistics and analysis. On the other hand, things that are very simple for humans, such as identifying colors or recognizing faces, can be incredibly difficult for computers to do. In short: computers, algorithms, and AI are great at some things, but humans are better at others.
