Now I only normally attend conferences when I’m being paid to speak; or I can arrange some paid work around the conference, or it’s just really easy to do (like Social Recruiting in London next week). In any case, we included people from recruitment, learning, legal and other areas, not just core HR. The key point is that we’re not against slides, just the mind numbing way they’re used in lots of traditional conferences. Don’t get me wrong, Bill deserves heaps of praise for trying something new – and I’d much rather attend a TRU event than many, though not all, traditional conferences, but my sort of unconference it’s not.

I’ve already noted that I’ve not been attending the CIPD’s co-located recruiting or HR software conferences this year. In fact, I’m out in Barcelona delivering my own smaller recruitment focused event. Meanwhile, the proportion of companies that expect to add new jobs has increased to 28% in 2011, up from 20% in 2010 and only 8% in 2009. Changes in resourcing and talent practices in 2011 compared with 2010 reflect a stronger focus on costs and reductions in budgets.
