A Knowledge Management Conference that Actually Used KM Principles

Conversation Matters

Like many organizations, the US Army holds a Knowledge Management Conference each year. And like most conferences there are three kinds of activities, 1) keynote speakers, 2) practitioners telling about their KM successes, and 3) long breaks for people to network. I’ve had the honor of speaking at all of the Army KM conferences since they began in 2005, including the one just recently held. The 6th annual US Army KM Conference was indeed different!

The Conference Call or "Death by a Thousand Bleeps"

Glen Ross of the American Cancer Society recently shared this hilarious video of a typical conference call. So in support of more effective conference calling, here are some resources that might help: Fast Company's 10 Rules for Effective Conference Calls --Great tips, but I particularly enjoy the dialogue for how violating the rules plays out in a call. Leading More Effective Conference Calls --This tip list starts with what I think is the most important question.

Conference Homophily is a Problem--Maybe Conference Mashups are the Solution

The Bamboo Project Blog

I'm back from a two-day conference and I think I've discovered one of the reasons conferences are becoming a big waste for me--the homophily problem , otherwise known as "birds of a feather, flock together." Most professional conferences are made up of people who are in a particular occupation or industry, which means people who tend to look at the world through the same lens. I'm thinking, for example, of a conference for classroom teachers and corporate trainers/educators.

Like many professionals who try to balance daily work demands with awareness of industry and practice trends and innovations, this year I’ve attended and/or presented at my fair share of conferences, workshops, and trade shows. Socialising the CIPD Annual Conference

Strategic HCM

I’m not at the CIPD annual conference today as I’m presenting tonight at the HR 2.0 conference in San Francisco. But I sent the CIPD some inputs on the conference this Summer and thought it might be worth reviewing how things have progressed in the conference this year. You could do with social media being on the conference agenda. I did get a press invite to the conference this year – the first time I’ve not had to push for one – so a big tick for this one.

Conference Attendance 301

In 2010 I wrote Conference Attendance 101 , a post on my blog, Data Point Tuesday. Attending HR conferences successfully – getting the most out of the experience – really has taken careful planning and tons of time management. Some HR conferences are so big and have so much going on, that it can really feel like work to make sure you’re achieving an appropriate ROI for your employer. But conferences have changed over the last 7 years.

More on Conferencing Mash-ups

Conference Mashup Models and Options. Tim Davies suggested framing a conference around some shared challenges or problems : I. Two or more fields grappling with similar challenges might benefit from co-hosting a conference around that area.

The Bamboo Project Blog

We are currently in the heart of conference season for many SHRM State Councils. Illinois had a successful conference last month. Wisconsin and Texas are about to embark on their conference adventure. For most state councils, the state conference is THE primary mechanism for raising dollars to support many of their state HR activities. For many local SHRM chapters, conference support is a strong economic driver. Pardon me while I go "Inside SHRM" for a bit.

Relationships in social recruiting

Strategic HCM

There have been some fairly consistent views about social recruiting expressed this morning at Alan Whitford and Vic Okezie’s social recruiting conference… Views which I think contrast to the way many if not most organisations looking at social recruiting are trying to do it, and to those expressed in a few different articles recently, eg this one from John Sumser. Moving ahead to 2010, and as shown by the two case studies above, it’s become an increasingly popular strategy.

Having been involved with chapter boards and state councils for a number of years, working to get a meeting or conference is a constant challenge. Let''s say that 25% of those are repeats from another chapter or conference, and we add in all the state and national conference speakers, and we are talking over 11,500 sessions that HRCI has approved. Trying to certified 575 sessions a month, along with state and national conference sessions, is an arduous undertaking.
