Saturday Spark #25. By Susan Hunt Stevens, Founder & CEO. Like many leaders, I don’t completely stop working while on vacation. It’s partly the nature of entrepreneurship and running a small company. There are just certain things that can’t wait, nor is there someone else to do them. I also pride myself personally on being responsive, particularly to customers, so will check in just to make sure nothing urgent has emerged.

The economy is strong, or at least so the various reports on Google News tell us. Unemployment rates have held steady , and there are now more job openings than people to fill them. However, low unemployment doesn’t equate to a healthier economy. The jobs available also have to be paying well, providing essential benefits, and helping to elevate and maintain a financially stable population. Historically, those jobs tend to be full-time positions that require an average of about 40 hours per week.

Readers of this blog often ping me to have conversations about the best way to get started writing and sharing thoughts on the world of HR. Sunday night is when I sit down to pen my weekly blog. Usually, the words flow easily and I can put something together relatively quickly. If you don’t know, I am an extremely positive person 90% of the time. It’s natural and genuine. Honestly, it feels a bit odd to type it out because I don’t mean this in either an arrogant or naive way. I believe in the good in life and in people. Then, the mass shootings of El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio happened this Saturday.

Change has a bad reputation. The mere prospect of it is known to be scary, unsettling and intimidating. But as a comfort, we must remind ourselves that change is also exciting, exhilarating and the only way to make progress—in life, and at work. A recent estimation put 40% of the world’s jobs at risk of automation over the next 15 years. That’s a major shift, but it’s nothing new — throughout history, advances in technology have replaced human jobs time and again. Between 1947 and 2014, for example, the number of U.S. workers employed by the railroad industry dropped by 86% as a result of new technology and automation.
