Next week, I am headed out to speak at and attend the WorkHuman conference in Austin, TX. Globoforce , the technology company who created and hosts this event calls it a “movement.” It’s a great way to benefit from some of the learning and insights being shared in real time.
Last week, I had the privilege to speak at and attend Workhuman. It is a remarkable event hosted by the visionary people of Globoforce. We focus on helping employees feel more authentic, happy, healthy and engaged at work. There is a wind at our backs. Now is the time, and we all have a role to play.
Nearly every spoof of corporate office culture has taken a dig at meetings ( this skit about real life conference calls is one of my favorites). While at WorldatWork’s Total Rewards conference in San Diego this week, my colleague and I visited a local spot called The Cat Café. Only 8 people are allowed in the room at once. One key point: “It’s more cost-effective to reward an employee at the time they achieve something than replace them when they leave.”.
Last October it was announced that Lisa Borders, former president of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and former VP of global affairs at Coca-Cola, would take the helm as CEO of TIME’S UP. It was proof positive that TIME’S UP has evolved to be much more than a hashtag or group of celebrities at an awards show.
This phrase resonated through the entire WorkHuman conference last week in Orland, Globoforce’s 2nd annual WorkHuman event. Globoforce stepped their game up dramatically with the attendance of over 1,000 individuals, a 4x improvement over last year. I’ve had the privilege of attending both WorkHuman events and I’m a huge fan.
With recent technology advancements, organizations are finding new ways to improve engagement and create a productive atmosphere at the office. As NY Times bestselling author Kevin Kruse explains , “It is an emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals”. However, not all is lost.

Not surprisingly, there was a lot of focus on the human and employee experience at the WorkHuman conference. So as we begin to automate certain roles, HR should be at the table driving the discussion and defining new roles. Globoforce , the company behind WorkHuman, is a recognition company so the topic featured fairly prominently.

Arianna spoke at last year’s WorkHuman event, and she had interesting things to say about how HR can add value by slowing things down and asking our leaders to be more mindful when it comes to behaviors and attitudes in the workplace. So I’m excited to attend WorkHuman.
Since the Spring event season is just about over, (I think I have one more to attend, the always interesting HireVue event in a couple of weeks), I wanted to share at least a small part of what I saw, heard, and learned at a few of these events from early 2016.
