Work life balance is defined as a “concept including proper prioritization between career and lifestyle.” I realize some people will say work life balance is a myth. Some might say work life integration is a much better term. Regardless of what you call it, I’d like to think we can agree on this: we don’t work all the time. We want to know we can take time off.

In the world of HR, one question comes up year after year: how can we leverage new technological advances and incorporate them into our hiring process ? Instead of presenting outcomes and metrics that are relevant only to HR, frame your requests in a different way, a way that benefits everyone. HR needs to partner with the business to assess activities that will add value to the company, and not just become another expense.

The healthcare industry today is facing a perfect storm. Employee recognition — done right — is today’s must-have for business. Social employee recognition systems appear on Gartner’s Hype Cycle, climbing the curve to become a standard business system — but how do you choose the right system? It’s a choice that comes with very high stakes. Pick the wrong partner and you not only risk throwing your money to the wind; you could also alienate your entire workforce.

I have often been guilty of using the phrase, “There’s no such thing as a happy non-performer” when discussing the idea that basic human nature is to be disappointed when performing poorly. In all honesty, it was, at times, my way of justifying (to myself and others) letting an employee go or reprimanding for poor performance. In addition to the performance component, I was telling myself that the employee couldn’t have been happy because he was an underperformer—my way of justifying the psych

I think it’s fair to assume that not everyone in the business world has significant experience in dealing successfully with recession and the downturns it carries with it.
