Although we often hear about these types of environments paired with big names—Elon and Twitter, anyone?—toxic work environments can be found anywhere from the coffee shop next door to the 6-person start-up in Silicon Valley.

A few weeks ago, I blogged here about how a federal appellate court concluded that firing someone who isn’t a ‘good fit’ isn’t necessarily a coded phrase for discrimination. Still, I generally recommend to clients that they be more direct when terminating someone’s employment by explaining the legitimate business reason(s) for the decision.

Onboarding often has a far greater impact on a new hire’s success than many recruiters realize. A high-quality, comprehensive experience empowers candidates with knowledge, ensuring they’re ready for the journey ahead. Plus, onboarding is often an introduction to their new employer, and a positive impression leaves them optimistic about the opportunity well after they were offered a job, leading to a stronger performance and improved mindset.

Bonuses are great. No one ever wants to turn down money. But, when a bonus is too small, it’s best to skip it altogether. For instance, take a look at the above example from the Anti Work Subreddit. Handing an employee $25 as a gesture of goodwill on a random Friday is fine. Telling an employee that if they work hard for five years (5 years!) they’ll be rewarded with $25 is an insult.

Meal and rest breaks are among the trickiest aspects of managing a workforce in California. Misunderstandings can be costly — for instance, each workday that an employer fails to provide a meal break to an employee as required, the employee is owed one additional hour of pay at their regular rate of pay. And, in California, laws governing meal and rest breaks continue to evolve — mostly not in favor of employers.

Hiring teams base their decisions on many factors, most significantly a candidate’s experience, qualifications, and core competencies. Core competencies are the unique traits, attitudes, and behavior patterns that enable employees to succeed in that particular role. Experience and expertise are easy to assess. Hyper-personalization is everywhere these days, and the workplace is no different. Today’s employees need to be recognized as individuals in order to thrive, do their best work, and remain engaged. And HR leaders understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to compensation and benefits doesn’t best serve their people, or the organization.
