TENEO #HRCoreLab2 Performance Management

Strategic HCM

Earlier this month I co-chaired Teneo''s 2 day Performance Management conference as part of HR Core Lab 2 in Barcelona. And yet, I think that most people agreed, and as Jerome Sulivan from SuccessFactors suggested, everyone hates performance management. If this is the case, we surely need to start doing something more radicallly different from how performance management exists today. But this doesn''t mean using performance management helps.

The Pros and Cons of Tying Compensation to Performance Reviews

Reviewsnap

At Reviewsnap, we''ve seen firsthand the benefits delivered by a pay-for-performance structure that closely ties compensation to the performance review process. Like most human capital challenges, tying compensation to performance reviews has its share of pros and cons. Employees often complain that raises and reviews are based on intangibles (how well their manager likes them, office politics, etc.) The stronger the performance, the better the raise.

Is "making teams better" the new holy grail of performance analytics? Fresh from the annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference , HBR blogger and MIT Research Fellow Michael Schrage notes that one of the top themes of the event was how to move beyond the Moneyball -like era of predicting and assessing individual performance and focusing on teamness. More quantitative attention is being paid to how well players improve the in-game performances of their teammates.

Performance Management Disrupted: Empowering Individuals and Teams to Do Their Best

Over the last 20 years, organizations have redesigned, reworked, and revamped performance management time and time again. They’ve tried different rating models, feedback tools, manager coaching, recognition programs, continuous performance management, and more. Both are normally great conferences - helped by the space they operate within as there is so much new and highly impactful within HR tech. However as I''m not chairing HR Tech Europe this year (three years was quite enough for a while) I have a bit more freedom to say that I think one aspect of these conferences needs firmly squashing down into place. In fact I''ve been following the tweets from the NeuroLeadership Summit (NLS) in San Francisco as well as HR Technology conference (HRTech) in Las Vegas. So one of the other concepts we looked at is self determination theory - that I''ll be engaged by something if it''s coming from me - which is often down to competence, autonomy and relatedness (see Dan Pink''s Drive). And I still don''t believe that ''most of us want to earn points, gain badges, and move up levels'' any more than I did before the conference. I use Foursquare quite a bit though until this conference I''d never shared any of my badges.
