I’ve mentioned before that I have a tendency to stockpile magazines so I can read during flights. During a recent flight, I was reading some old issues of Training Magazine on my way to Austin for the Great Place to Work’s Small and Medium Business Conference and it occurred to me that today’s career development efforts can be summarized into three areas of responsibility. We have a responsibility to train employees for their current roles.

Regular training can help prevent lawsuits. Teaching a class the other day, I was covering the subject of training, particularly supervisory training. I referenced a blog post I wrote in September entitled Lack of Supervisory Training costs a company $277,565. This particular case did not actually go to court, and to be honest involved more than training. Not enough training. My experience has been that small companies don’t spend that on training.
