It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…. 1. I’m getting a smaller raise because I negotiated when I started. I’ve been working for my current company for just over a year now. My boss has been thrilled with my work, and a few months ago he verbally expressed that he would like to give me a merit raise. He said we would discuss it at another time as the raise wouldn’t kick in until performance review time, early this year.
Now is the perfect time for a review of your I-9 compliance efforts for a number of reasons. For starters, the most recently revised form became mandatory in the fall. Plus, the Dept. of Homeland Security’s Immigration & Customs Enforcement agency (also known as ICE) can investigate your company’s I-9 records on an at-will basis – and has already been increasing these investigations with higher fines.
Employers have high expectations for business and headcount growth in 2018, but a severe skills shortage in the fastest growing sectors could hinder plans, according to the 2018 U.S. Salary Guide from Hays, a specialist recruitment agency. Based on a survey of more than 3,000 people, the Hays US 2018 Salary Guide asked U.S. professionals, managers, and employers about current business, compensation, and workforce trends.
Decision fatigue refers to the deteriorating quality of decisions as one is forced to engage in more and more decision-making. If you’ve ever planned an event, re-designed a home or purchased a new car, you probably remember the exhaustion and indifference that eventually resulted from being faced with so many choices. Many companies put managers at risk of decision fatigue by creating performance management, compensation, staffing and development processes that require evaluating multiple peopl
We’re not sugarcoating it: retirement benefits in America are broken. As our workforce ages, too many employers cling to outdated benefit structures that drain budgets while leaving retirees confused, underserved, and anxious about healthcare costs. In this high-impact webinar, we will challenge everything you think you know about benefits for your aging and retired employees, especially the hidden potential of Group Medicare as a strategic advantage—not just a compliance checkbox.
A few months ago, I had the opportunity to hear Shally Steckerl , founder of The Sourcing Institute Foundation and senior sourcing consultant at Fiserv, talk about “Using Tools and Pipelines to Source Talent” at the Recruiting Trends & Talent Tech Conference. One of the things he mentioned stuck with me: the notion that it’s not only important to find and try new recruiting sources, but to evaluate their effectiveness.
Like it or not, the war for talent will only become more competitive in 2018. As such, recruiters must assume the role of online marketing masters to attract the best talent and there's no better way to start than by applying search engine marketing (SEM) and search engine optimization (SEO) strategies. Google receives 300 million job-related search requests each month, which makes up nearly 30 percent of all Google searches.

You find yourself having to fill a job vacancy at work. Perhaps it’s a tough position where you’ve had above average turnaround. Or, your company is ramping up its growth. Or, you would simply like the timesaving advantage of having a potential candidate start as soon as possible and test them out before making an offer. These are the more popular reasons for hiring a temporary employee with the intention of making them permanent, once they meet your criteria.
I’m a big believer that if you want to know what employees are thinking, you should ask them. And in this technology age, one of the best ways to do that is via an electronic survey. Surveys are only as good as their design. It’s important when designing any type of survey that the questions are constructed properly and the number of questions makes sense.

In today’s complex healthcare environment, navigating third-party relationships has become even more challenging—whether it’s vendor relationships, employee activities, or patient-facing interactions. Left unmanaged, these conflicts can compromise trust, regulatory compliance, and even organizational reputation. So, how can healthcare teams stay ahead?
010010000000 It must be a hell of a feeling when your skin, ideas, and presence become a golden ticket of Willy Wonka proportions in life. It must be nice to not only create the rules, systems, and standards but to actually be “the standard”. It is utterly astonishing when you can be given the […].
Cultures that deliver a high level of performance and create competitive advantage for an organization are grown by leaders with the foresight to recruit the right “human essence” that ensures long-term success. You hire to fill a job but you recruit to build a successful culture. In my three-decade career as an executive leader, I discovered that there are some basic competencies in people that, when operating in unison, not only create a workplace where people love to work together, but also d
Workplace stress is an issue. According to The American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers feel stress on the job. Nearly half say that they need help in learning how to manage stress. An increasing number of organizations are looking at formal wellness programs, but honestly, that might not be enough. Organizations might have to think about how they create cultures that allow employees to feel comfortable practicing self-care.
Sexism in the workplace has been an important topic this past year. The headlines abound— “Study: Women Valued for Physical Attractiveness" or “We Need More Women to Overcome the Sexist Tech Industry" —but this pervasive issue could soon be addressed, if only in part, with a little help from technology. As artificial intelligence continues to play an larger role in talent acquisition, it has the potential to impact gender bias.

Employee engagement is critical to retention. Don’t believe us? The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median period people stay in their jobs is just over four years. And for those age 25 to 34 it’s even less (2.8 years). Broaden this to all millennials, and you’ve got a group that’s even more on the move – a scary prospect given they make up roughly a third of today’s U.S. workforce.
Recently, we have had several organizations come to us with the same basic question: What can we do to improve employee engagement if 90% of our employees stay less than 6 months? It’s important to note that these organizations are not fundamentally flawed and somehow hemorrhaging talent. It’s that their business models lend themselves to high turnover.
Mr. Bartender and I have been talking about our home offices lately. We haven’t updated our furniture in a while – well, except for my Herman Miller office chair – and we think we’re due. Lots of organizations are doing the same. They recognize the value in having a nice office space with good lighting, ergonomic furniture, etc. But one of the things I’m realizing in the conversations Mr.

In the complex anatomy of your organization, your workforce is the heartbeat. A strong, healthy heart pumps blood throughout the body, usually at a steady rate, but can work much faster when necessary. Similarly, a robust workforce propels productivity throughout the organization, supplying oxygen in the form of discretionary effort and removing toxins such as complacency.
The way I measure my success as a leader is by regularly asking myself these four questions: Speaking of building relationships, I’d like to share a defining moment in my career a several years ago when I faced adversity while acquiring additional business. A very important client asked us to step in by operating a career center after the previous provider had committed fraud.
In 1968, Malcolm Knowles coined the term “ andragogy "—the science of adult learning—and proposed guidelines for creating content geared towards adult learners. According to Knowles, the content must be relevant, draw on life experience and be immediately useful. Additionally, adult learning must shift from dependence on the teacher to self-directed learning and the motivation to learn should come from inside the learner.
On September 4, 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Retail Worker Safety Act (S. 8358B/A. 8947C) into law, requiring retail employers in New York to adopt workplace violence prevention policies and implement training programs by March 2025. Training colleagues to use a new HR technology can be daunting and there is a lot of pressure to get it right. If users feel frustrated and uncertain while using a new tool, such as a people strategy platform , they may return to the old methods of figuring out their HR data despite how antiquated or cumbersome they are. When I led the training during the roll out of Visier People to City of Edmonton employees, I wanted to ensure that every lesson I prepared would make mastering the self-service

Almost one in three people believe themselves to be perfectionists. So why isn’t the world – and the workplace – you know, better ? The pedantic answer is to point out that perfection and perfectionism are quite different things. But the deeper truth is that, far from driving us towards “better”, perfectionism can actually be a destructive force that prevents sufferers from getting things done, hinders creativity, and frequently leads to depression and illness.
