One of the most important responsibilities we give to managers is employee performance. Organizations ask managers to set performance standards, communicate those standards, and train employees to deliver. Creating high performance isn’t a goal; it’s a key component of a manager’s job. Frankly, it’s a big job. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that. We talk about “Managers need to do this…” or “Managers must do that…” Truth is, managers need to focus on creating the conditions for high performance.

Onboarding is an important piece of the hiring process, and one that more and more leaders are working to improve in their organizations. Onboarding starts before the first day and carries on to the job offer, new hire documentation, training and goal setting for performance management. Though it is such an integral part of any new hire’s development, the conversation usually focuses on those employees who are entry or associate level.

I’ve always read that the number one concern of CEOs is recruiting and retaining talent. At this year’s Great Place to Work Conference , I heard from several CEOs that the speed of change was keeping them up at night. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe they were saying that recruiting and retention weren’t important anymore. My take was that recruiting and retention are a given.

It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…. 1. Advertising jobs I might not ultimately hire for. I’m a relatively new manager of a small team of 4.5 (one employee is part-time). Two of my four full-time employees recently put in notice within two weeks of each other. The first was an experienced position, and we were thinking of replacing her with more of a junior position and delegating her more senior tasks to some others on the team.

An onboarding program is essential to the success of new hires. It ea ses the new employee’s transition into the organization and lays the groundwork for their employment. There are a number of ways to approach the development of your company’s onboarding program, all of which should align with the culture and values your organization holds. However, the onboarding program should also speak to the unique individual who is joining, touching on their own concerns and potential challenges.

Ever since I saw the headline that “ Sitting is the New Smoking ”, I’ve been trying to figure out ways to add more activity into my daily routine. But I have to admit, developing healthy habits is hard. Especially when you work from home. And you’re busy. I can’t speak for anyone else but exercise moves way down on my priority list when I’m stressed out about a deadline.

I’ve been trying to stay out of the conversation regarding sexual harassment at Uber and beyond, mainly because I think that putting attention on toxic behavior only serves to amplify it. I also don’t have any direct solutions, since it appears that harassment persists despite company policies and procedures to eradicate that behavior. But after reading the recent news of several prominent male VCs sexually harassing female founders, and rereading the accounts of repeated harassment endure

Robust onboarding programs are now the new norm, or at least expected to be, in strong-cultured companies. Studies show that when you invest in a new hire’s experience in the first 90 days, their performance over the lifetime in that company is drastically higher than those without a strong orientation. Yet most programs focus only on brand new hires, overlook four important groups of people: New Parents.

I was a brand new manager when I hired a temporary employee to do a specific project at a very conservative company. While we didn't have to wear suits, we definitely dressed on the formal side of business casual. One Friday a year, however, you could make a $5 donation to a company sponsored charity and wear jeans. Unfortunately, the temp started the same week as this once-a-year jeans day.

I have had numerous discussions with people around this very topic. What does mentoring look like in the “digital age” and what are the skill sets that we would need to be effective. Let’s first take a look at mentoring as most of us know it. Typically we see mentoring as the wise old sage passing on wisdom and knowledge through a process of suggesting or telling a seemingly younger person on how they should address a particular situation or problem.

My son, who is a little league pitcher, pitched in the first game of the year a few weeks ago. During the game, he used solid mechanics and high effort, and he threw a lot of strikes. In the third inning, he threw a great pitch, and the batter swung and hit a home run. My son did everything he could do—he threw the ball hard and accurately—but the outcome was a home run.

Dear ReWorker, I'm a small business owner, and like most small business owners, I'm not rich. I put every penny into my business and only draw a reasonable salary myself. I don't have any extra money for employee raises, but when a valuable employee has another job offer, I'll make a counter offer to keep them. I realize this probably isn't the best practice, but I really don't have the extra cash to provide raises.
