How losing what I thought was everything in 2008 reminded me I will get through 2020.

Thrive Global

In the middle of April, I started a community initiative ‘ find your power in the middle of chaos ‘ as news of a pandemic wreaked havoc onto the lives of many. It wasn’t my intention to start a movement of any kind, all I knew at that time as I still do now, was that I needed to do my part. This was new territory, we were the real actors to a very difficult storyline. My children like most everyone else’s were suddenly at home full-time.

More on Learning Through Blogging: What Readers Think

Boxes and Arrows

My post a few days ago arguing that the real value of blogging lies not just in reading blogs, but in commenting on blog posts and writing your own, generated a lot of comments and some great references to what others are thinking. Most people seemed to agree with my premise that while reading blog posts can be helpful to learning, commenting and being a blogger yourself adds even more value. Learning is an active process. If learners want to learn, they will learn.

Negative Online Behavior is a Product of Culture, Not Your Social Media Tools: What I’m Learning from the Work Literacy Course

The Bamboo Project Blog

One of the questions I’m most frequently asked when talking to people about using social media for learning in organizations is how do you “manage&# comments and how do you deal with people “being negative.&# There’s a general fear that once you open the floodgates to participation, you’re going to be inundated with people acting inappropriately and unprofessionally. Seventeen videos/presentations and 34 photos have been added to the site.

Blogging for Learning: Blog Challenges

Boxes and Arrows

This week we’re exploring various strategies for using a blog to support personal and formal learning as part of the Work Literacy course’s focus on blogging. In a blog challenge, several bloggers work together on a group learning project over a period of time–a few days, a week, a month. Each day during the challenge, learning activities are posted for bloggers to engage in and then blog about. How did the experience change their practices?

An Introduction To Building Effective Teams

Reviewsnap

A manager''s role has changed dramatically over the past 10 to 15 years. This change stems from the realization that old management techniques and styles are no longer effective given the changes taking place in peoples'' attitudes about work. The manager of the 90''s and beyond will need to be an effective builder of teams whether the team is his/her work unit or specialized teams formed to plan, refine processes, solve problems or carry out some other task.

A few weeks ago I blogged about Zaid's list of the top Edubloggers and Janet Clarey's observation that out of 25 bloggers, there were only 3 women on Zaid's list. Not one to forego a learning experience, Zaid immediately took our discussion as an opportunity to expand his own learning and set off on a search for women edubloggers. The result is in his slideshow.

What To Do When You Become The Boss: Book Review

Transparent Office

I got a copy of What To Do When You Become The Boss a few months back, but I didn’t review it because I somehow lost it in my pile of books. Thankfully Bob Selden, the author of this book, reached back out to me to ask about my review. I sheepishly admitted I couldn’t find the book, so Bob sent me a PDF copy within 15 minutes of my admission. Throughout the book, Bob has questions to help you think about the WHY you manage, not just the how.

HR Roles

Evil HR Lady

Now (for only the second time in my career) I work for a company that is large enough to actually have an HR department! Could you please give a quick summary of the various HR roles and the differences? Oh the desire for Snark is overwhelming me. Companies differ and you can have two people with identical titles at different companies do very different jobs. They take the "business" POV in dealing with a conflict between management and an employee.

Career Changes and Salary

Evil HR Lady

I want to join the wonderful world of HR because it is just so darn interesting. My issue is.when I am asked for my past salary, I am afraid to put down what I was really making before I dropped out of consulting (in the high 70's) because I don't want to be taken out of the pool of applicants. I want to be truthful but maybe the truth will hurt. You have experience on the business side. Well, maybe not a monkey unless the monkey knew power point.

Carnival of HR

Evil HR Lady

In fact, this isn't the only reason I should be fired. HR Wench writes about the Americans With Disabilities act and Age Discrimination in answering a question about a school teacher. David Wentworth at even tells you how to downsize. So, getting rid of me is no problem at all. Your talent is where it's at. Micheal Moore presents the E-Verify nightmare. Well, Ask a Manager positively does not like Employee of the Month Programs. I know.

Firing Procedures

Evil HR Lady

The procedural steps I do use were gained by asking other senior staff in hallways what they do in this organization. These procedures require a supervisor to be present at the point of firing as a witness. My department doesn't have a supervisor, so I invited the head of HR to attend the event. She sat w/ her head down through out the brief discussion. I replied well he's walking down the hall. Leading up to the termination.

A Lousy Raise

Evil HR Lady

I just spoke with our Finance Director, who indicates that, due to our company's subpar performance (of note: we conducted a 10% company-wide RIF in July '07), our typical 4-5% annual increases will either be (a) zilch; (b) 1.5 - 2.5%; or (c) option "b" plus the possibility of 1-2% more based on company performance when September '08 rolls around. I can hear it now -- "what's the point of appraisals?!"); and (b) know they are below market rate.

What is it Really Like to Be in HR?

Evil HR Lady

So, I thought I'd take the time today to answer that question. Arrive at the office. They just wanted to thank all of us for helping them out with the headcount they needed for the annual budget review." One message from an employee thanking you for the coaching you gave. "It Just some announcements from the company. Prepare for your first meeting of the day. Meet with the above employee's manager. I just want to do the right thing."

Find Out What is Going On--But it Better Darn Well be Positive

Evil HR Lady

Greetings Evil HR Lady, I've recently experienced an HR issue--that maybe all HR folks experience at some point-- that I would really like your opinion on. Since I've only been with Company X only 4 months, I've spent much of that time creating forms, processes, working with managers, and trying to learn everything I can about existing processes and procedures. The owners are two siblings. Every employee conversation was worse than the one before it.

Is More Education Better?

Evil HR Lady

I know that while I have the degree I lack real world experience and as such have been looking for an entry level HR job with moderate success. My friends and family have encouraged me to begin looking at getting my Masters degree. I am not opposed to the idea but I’m unsure as what to get it in. Human Resources is the field I want to work in. Some people are telling me to stay in the field I love while others are telling me to get a degree in something else (MBA?)

5 Mistakes Successful Speakers Never Make

Unbridled Talent

I make my living as a professional communicator, which means I have the honor of speaking with audiences at over 50 corporate, association and conference events each year. Whenever possible, I like to attend other sessions at these events – because I enjoy learning, and I also want to watch great speakers, so I can continue to grow and improve as a speaker myself. I left the session frustrated, because myself, and about 150 others, had wasted 75 minutes.
