More on Learning Through Blogging: What Readers Think

And Brandon shared a great story of how Twittering at a conference (a form of live microblogging) improved his own learning experience. I attended Penn State's 2008 TLT (Teaching & Learning with Technology) Symposium in March 2008 as a requirement for a graduate class I was taking, entitled "Disruptive Technology in the Teaching & Learning Process." Cursed at first, but later this turned out to be a blessing.

An Introduction To Building Effective Teams

Reviewsnap

While in the short-run, employees motivated by fear might produce well, they are often reluctant to express opinions that they perceive run counter to the manager''s and/or will attempt to hide problems. A facilitating leader looks at authority as something to be shared and used in a manner that will help empower the team. A word of caution is appropriate at this point. Knowing what kind of style you present in the workplace is critical to effective team building.

The Major Drawback To Checking References

Let''s go back and look at the first reference you called. Even asking questions such as "When Mary was faced with high expectations, how well did she meet those expectations?" This will provide some insight into how well the candidate understands the notion of accountability, but perhaps more importantly will reveal something about the culture(s) he/she has operated in previously. Let''s suppose you''re hiring for a key mid-level management position.

Blogging for Learning: Blog Challenges

Boxes and Arrows

Well-structured challenges are fun , especially if you bring prizes into the mix. I’d suggest at most 2 weeks, and probably an ideal strategy would be to do week-long challenges. The Activities At the heart of a blog challenge is a set of daily activities related to the theme of the challenge. At the end of the challenge, be sure to include at least one activity that asks learners to somehow summarize what they’ve learned.

Find Out What is Going On--But it Better Darn Well be Positive

Evil HR Lady

Greetings Evil HR Lady, I've recently experienced an HR issue--that maybe all HR folks experience at some point-- that I would really like your opinion on. Other stories were, well, scary. Shortly after I joined them they decided to let go of certain managers for performance reasons (and well, I think they weren't well liked). Well, see, here's the problem. So, you probably have two brothers who are good at the "business," but not good at managing it.

The consultant then writes that up in a power point presentation and presents it. We can train you how to look at compensation data. I want to join the wonderful world of HR because it is just so darn interesting.

Firing Procedures

Evil HR Lady

These procedures require a supervisor to be present at the point of firing as a witness. When the work at hand was concluded, I asked her if she was going to walk the ex employee out of the building, she raised her head and said huh.? I replied well he's walking down the hall. Well, first of all, you don't know what "mis-handling" they are talking about and neither do I. I don't know if this is standard at your company, but they generally are.

Motivating Employees

Evil HR Lady

Well, why don't you want their noses to the grindstone? I, personally, have the attention span of a flea and am frequently doing numerous tasks at once, listening to music and keeping up on Dear Abby, so that I can mock her over here. Someone might think I'm being a slacker, but if you look at the quality and quantity of my work, you'd know that I'm good at what I do. If the bad employee isn't meeting those expectations, you can have a "chat" with her as well.

A Lousy Raise

To complicate matters, our pay increase formula typically includes comparison with market data (some are at market, some are below) and scores from performance appraisals. Any of the options presented by the FD throw our formula out the window, thereby ticking off employees who have (a) spent a significant amount of time on self-appraisals, multi-rater appraisals, appraisals with managers, etc. (I

What is it Really Like to Be in HR?

Thankfully, you've been able to devote at least two hours every day for the past two weeks to this, as it's a critical change in the company. Is More Education Better?

Evil HR Lady

My friends and family have encouraged me to begin looking at getting my Masters degree. to show that I’m well rounded. You may well have good reasons--you've been staying home with the kids or you're recovering from cancer are both good reasons. I found out that I love HR, but I didn't even consider that as an undergraduate because the only HR person I'd ever come in contact with was the girl who did the hiring at Kmart.

Let’s Face It: Gen Y Still Has it Right

TalentCulture

I wrote the post because of discussions claiming that Millenials were completely different from other groups at work. Well, I am still detecting a subtle undertone that Millenials (all 75 million of them) are somehow markedly different from others at work — and I remain baffled. I simply will not subscribe to stereotypes, when discussing people at work. In other words: they didn’t all want the same things at work.
