2011: The Year of Visibility

Working Girl

Well, they were bound to discover it at some point. These are the themes that must concern us in 2011 if we are to recover from the greed, short-sightedness and personal tragedy of the previous two years. So I am going to make a prediction and call 2011 ‘The Year of Visibility,’ because companies that rely on reactionary hiring, contracting and downsizing in lieu of informed business planning probably won’t be around in five years.

But I’ve now had a look through the initial results ( the survey actually only closes at the weekend) and I think you’ll find them interesting. One of my favourites is i4cp’s list of critical human capital issues in 2011. Where are the Meaningful Conversations at Work?

The Bamboo Project Blog

This weekend, I went on a retreat with 10 other women to reflect on our experiences in 2011 and plan for what we wanted to do in 2012. One of the most eye-opening realizations I had in our weekend away was the profound LACK of meaningful conversations at work and in our personal lives. We spend our days talking about the work, but do nothing to really get at what's going on underneath that leads to those undercurrents of tension, dissatisfaction and anxiety. .

Are You Breeding Monsters at Work? Conversations We Need to Have About Penn State

The Bamboo Project Blog

The first is the moral debacle unraveling at Penn State University where a work culture that focused on hierarchy and protecting profits and reputation at all costs led apparently normal human beings to protect a child rapist for 10 years. They compared the results to the same tests on patients at Broadmoor special hospital, where people who have been convicted of serious crimes are incarcerated. We need to take a careful look at what REALLY goes on in our workplaces.

The Six 21st Century Skills You REALLY Need

The Bamboo Project Blog

I would also argue that we are not nearly as good at these skills as we think we are. . We need to look at how we ask questions, when we ask them and what kinds of questions we ask. It is also at the heart of creativity and innovation. . As a 21st century skill, I think we have to look at not only how we listen to and engage with people who see the world differently, we also need to look at the strategies we use to find and connect with them in the first place.

Improving Happiness at Work: Positive Practices and the Power of the Positive Question

The Bamboo Project Blog

An interesting article in the Harvard Business Review on The Happiness Dividend has me thinking this morning about how we can re-train our brains to be more positive at work. The issue is not whether happiness should matter at work--it clearly does. First, recognize that happiness is an advantage at work. Second, you can literally train your brain for higher levels of happiness at work by creating habits shown to increase job satisfaction.
