There’s something magical that happens when we wholeheartedly thank someone in a meaningful way — I mean a flow-blown THANK YOU that comes from the heart. The magic occurs on both the giving and receiving ends. According to UCLA neuroscientist Alex Korb , the “magic” of gratitude isn’t magic at all. Feelings of gratitude trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to enjoyment, focus, and euphoria.

While more than 75 percent of CEOs say gender equality is part of their top 10 business priorities, women remain underrepresented across every level of the corporate pipeline—comprising just 37 percent of management positions and 19 percent of C-Suite positions, according to a recent study from McKinsey and LeanIn.org. This gender disparity doesn't stem from the inability of women to perform at top levels.

Momentum is the strength or force that allows something to continue to grow stronger or faster over time. We tend to think of momentum in the context of objects – such as the rock gained momentum as it rolled downhill. But it occurred to me that momentum applies to activities – support for a project can gain momentum. If workplace activities can gain momentum, then we need to be focused on how to increase it.

By: Stephen de Groot President, Myriad Consulting. Employee engagement, according to Aon , Deloitte , Gallup , and thousands of scholarly articles, is one of the greatest game-changing mechanisms for companies looking to accelerate performance, exceed desired results and outperform their competitors. Engagement and Quality Leadership . The potential for managers to impact employee engagement is massive; Gallup estimates that managers account for at least 70 percent of the variance in employee
One of the common concerns we hear from leaders is how to create or maintain strong company cultures. This challenge is exacerbated considerably when the business (like ours) is globally distributed. My co-founder, Shane Metcalf, and I thought it would be helpful to share some of our experiences leading a distributed team and solutions for growing camaraderie and cohesion even when employees are located all across the globe.

In today’s complex healthcare environment, navigating third-party relationships has become even more challenging—whether it’s vendor relationships, employee activities, or patient-facing interactions. Left unmanaged, these conflicts can compromise trust, regulatory compliance, and even organizational reputation. So, how can healthcare teams stay ahead?
One of the things I love about my health insurance company is that they offer webinars and workshops to both members and the community. I’ve been able to get the latest info from a doctor about the Zika virus. They also hold nutrition workshops. Recently, I attended a Deskercise workshop (aka activities we can do at our desk). Because I work from home, I’m very conscious of the need to get active.
Bacon and eggs. Peanut butter and jelly. Chocolate and peanut butter. Learning and performance? Some things are just better together! Certainly you have heard of the trends going on in performance management; specifically the move towards doing away with ratings and focusing in on how best to truly develop employees. Some companies, like Amazon, T-Mobile and Deloitte, are foregoing the ratings part of performance reviews all together.
Companies with well-defined values know they create a virtuous cycle. First, the values attract top talent who are able to be picky about the tone of their workplace, and then, those people affirm the company values through their voices and actions. This is the case at Artemis Connection, a strategy consulting firm founded by Christy Johnson two years ago.
Risk is often thought of as something that happens from the outside –– such as a natural catastrophe or economic slump. Yet risk exists within your own business. And if you still use paper time sheets and time cards with your employees, you may be exposing your payroll process to a great deal of risk. Take employee time theft, for example. No one likes to think of employees stealing.

I know I’m a little late with a reference to “ Take Our Kids to Work Day ” but I believe the concept is one we should embrace year around. It’s important for us to expose kids to work. Because someday they’re going to enter the workforce and we want them to be prepared. In career development, that first level – often labeled entry – is where we learn those key attributes of being a good employee.
Dear ReWorker, Performance ratings are due soon, so I filled out the forms and rated my employees based on their performance throughout the year. I gave one employee an outstanding rating as I really think she has met those criteria. I gave her the performance review and the rating, and she was thrilled. Now, my boss is coming back saying I need to adjust the review downward.

On paper and according to the Black’s Law Dictionary, the term employee is defined as “a person in the service of another under any contract of hire, express or implied, oral or written, where the employer has the power or right to control and direct the employee in the material details of how the work is to be performed.”. To be practical, employees are what make, build and grow a business.

The leader who wouldn’t engage in ongoing conversations or feedback because she was too busy with her own job to stop and spend time recognizing good performance in the trenches. I’ve had that boss. Early in my career, I worked as a recruiter in a bustling HR department.

This is evidenced by our recent study on talent acquisition priorities , where half of talent leaders said that they were focused on improving the recruiting process over

All businesses have a slow season. It’s within this period that companies have a tendency to place urgency on reducing costs. In most cases, it’s a good way to tackle costs by trimming the fat. Unfortunately for some organizations the presumption is that managers will take the right actions to control their department costs. Or perhaps follow their CFO’s suggestions to delay critical investments, shift costs from one accounting category to another, or reduce overhead.
Those searching for how to improve employees’ performance often wonder if they are giving the right commands, or dolling orders in the best way. Often, though, the most effective way to improve the performance of your employees isn’t to give commands at all, but rather to ask the right questions and listen to draw the right action plan. Ron Ashkenas, a former business consultant and a contributor at Forbes says that “asking questions effectively is a major underlying part of a manager’s job — wh
